Overview

Vans have never been Americans’ first choice in vehicle, but there’s no denying their appeal and utility when it comes to getting work done. The Ford Transit does it better than anyone else, and it has the title of best-selling van under its belt to prove it. Ford left the Transit alone for 2022 and instituted no changes for the model year.
The Transit cargo van is available in several configurations. Ford offers two V6 engine choices, rear- or all-wheel drive (RWD or AWD), three different axle ratios, and numerous package and accessory options. The standard engine is a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 275 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. A turbocharged V6 is available that produces 310 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come with a ten-speed automatic transmission.
Cargo van buyers likely aren’t seeking a luxurious experience, and the Ford Transit doesn’t provide one. Two front seats and a big, open space are the van’s calling cards, and its large load floor provides up to 172.2 inches of length and 54.8 inches between the wheels to carry almost anything needed. That leaves seating capacity at two, but cargo capacity reaches 487.3 cubic feet behind the seats.
Ford does better than most on the tech front, but the Transit is still not the most tech-forward vehicle on sale. The base configuration includes a 4.0-inch display, but The Blue Oval offers an 8-inch touchscreen that brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, SiriusXM radio, and more. Fleet buyers can add telematics and tracking tech, and Ford offers a 12-inch display.
Most car buyers select options like upgraded stereos and more safety gear, but van buyers are a different breed. They choose from upfitter packages, which can turn the Transit into a purpose-built tool for a variety of trades, such as plumbers, electricians, and delivery companies. The van is available with high-capacity switches and upgraded wiring to handle auxiliary and power equipment. There’s also an RV prep package that brings a larger infotainment display, a higher-resolution rearview camera, additional safety gear, and revised seating with swiveling front buckets.
Commercial vehicles aren’t subjected to the same crash tests that most passenger cars get, so the Transit does not have ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Ford offers several optional features, including blind-spot monitoring, better cameras, a reverse sensing system, a perimeter alarm system, parking assist, and reverse braking assist.
The Transit Cargo Van starts at $43,455, but many will be sold for much more than that with options and upgrades. The more powerful turbo engine costs $1,775, the interior upgrade package adds $1,435, and there are several standalone interior options that can quickly drive the price north.
