CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Ford Mustang

Summary
With 232 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $37,927, 30.2% of 2022 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Ford Mustang 4.78 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Mustang stands out because it combines the Mustang’s long-running rear-wheel-drive sports-car formula with a wide range of powertrains and body styles. Ford’s buying guide describes the Mustang as one of Detroit’s most enduring nameplates and notes that it has been available in coupe and convertible forms over the years, which helps explain why it remains such a recognizable choice for shoppers who want something with both heritage and everyday appeal. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise centered on performance, handling, styling, and the availability of a manual transmission.
What makes the 2022 Ford Mustang especially distinctive is the breadth of its lineup. The guide says the current generation keeps the familiar front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and is offered in coupe and convertible body styles. It also notes that the Mustang is available with Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while upper trims can be had with 5.0-liter V8 engines producing 480 hp or 500 hp, depending on trim. A 10-speed automatic is the most common transmission, though some trims are available with six-speed manuals. That mix gives the Mustang a broad range of personalities, from more accessible daily-driver versions to more serious performance models.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The guide says the EcoBoost engine may get good mpg ratings, but it requires premium fuel, and it also reports that 2024 and 2025 Mustangs have been reported to suffer from powertrain vibrations, inconsistent interior build quality, limited-slip differential problems, and electronic stability control issues. For a used-car shopper, the 2022 Ford Mustang’s appeal is that it delivers classic Mustang character, strong performance options, and enough variety to suit different budgets and preferences, even if buyers should still pay attention to equipment, condition, and maintenance history.

My husband is against buying cars that have a history of being a rental. I think it’s because a rental isn’t your car and people are reckless. However, Kunes brought to my attention that rentals have strict maintenance requirements that make them a good choice.

Fun to drive. Ecoboost has enough power to have some fun. Everyones idea of enough power is relative but this car will go when you want it too. Looks are awesome and the feel is solid. Handling is excellent from where I am coming from. Id buy the car again.

The Mach 1 is a really good Mustang. Fills the gap between Gt and Gt350. The best thing is the Tremec transmission. But myself I need an automatic. Great body styling and nice exhaust rumble.

Is the 2022 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 4.78/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the performance, handling, and styling, and many also like the manual transmission and the fun driving experience it delivers. That fits especially well if you want a sporty vehicle with heritage appeal and enough variety to suit different budgets and preferences. With 32.7% of listings priced as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on performance, handling, and a trouble-free driving experience for many shoppers. The strong long-term enthusiasm suggests you’re looking at a model that many owners feel confident living with over time. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the badge and more about finding a well-maintained example with a clean history and consistent care.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Mustang?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with a history report so you can confirm accident status, title status, and maintenance patterns before you get too far into the process. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the car’s condition, especially if it has been modified or driven hard. Focus on signs of wear that match the car’s sporty use case, and make sure the equipment and maintenance history line up with how you plan to use it.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,739 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.38% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 78.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $30,471, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $34,257 sits slightly above last year's $33,792.
That upward movement suggests the market still places solid value on this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy carefully. A stable-to-rising price trend is useful for future sellers because it signals ongoing shopper interest rather than fading demand. If you keep the car in strong condition and maintain it well, you’re more likely to preserve value when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.38% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $30,903, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $34,257 average.
- It blends classic pony-car character with modern tech and a retro attitude.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the better all-around pick if you want stronger current-market confidence, solid owner satisfaction, and a broad set of listings to compare. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the Mustang’s core appeal.
