CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Ford Explorer
overall

Summary
With 9,622 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,152, 33.4% of 2022 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Ford Explorer 4.92 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
86.5% of 2022 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Explorer stands out as a midsize three-row SUV that was redesigned two years earlier and moved to a rear-drive platform. It also added an optional hybrid powertrain, giving buyers multiple powertrain options in a family-focused package. Ford’s approach was broad rather than narrow, with the Explorer offered from a value-rich base model up to a luxurious Platinum trim level, and later joined by ST-Line, Timberline, and King Ranch trim levels.
That wide spread of trims helps explain the Explorer’s appeal: it is meant to cover a lot of ground for different kinds of buyers. It offers plenty of cargo space and great safety ratings, and owners generally praise its comfort, performance, and practicality. At the same time, the 2022 model is not without drawbacks, including a cramped third row, outdated infotainment technology, and an unimpressive value equation.

The heated & cooling seats are fantastic. I havent tried out all of the features yet, but I am looking forward to figuring them all out. The drive is smooth and quite. Seats are comfortable, the third row fold down easily and add so much more room for a giant Sams Club or Costco run. I feel that I got a fantastic deal for the cost and the mileage on the vehicle. I was looking at the Toyota Highlander, GMC Acadia and Jeep Cherokee, but choose the Ford Explorer for all the reasons listed above.

How much does the 2022 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,098 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,098 |
| Year-Round High | $31,817 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,817 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.69% |
Prices have softened 11.69% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 9,637 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2022 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Ford Explorer earns a 4.92/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and practicality, and they also call out the spacious interior and cargo capacity as especially useful for families. The Explorer’s broad mission shows up in its use-case range, from a value-oriented base model to more upscale trims, so you can shop it as a family hauler or a more premium three-row SUV.
The trade-offs are a cramped third row and outdated infotainment technology, and the value equation is not especially strong. Even so, 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.92/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise centered on comfort, practicality, and confidence in daily use. The expert review also describes the Explorer as a vehicle that feels robust and well suited to regular driving, which supports the sense that it can be counted on over time.
Ford’s maintenance and ownership approach does not add a standout perk here, so your best protection is a careful pre-purchase inspection and a complete service history. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is buying a neglected example with unresolved wear or electronics issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Explorer?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history check. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on interior condition, third-row usability, and how well the infotainment and driver-assist systems work in real-world use. If you are comparing trims, pay close attention to which features are standard versus optional so you do not overpay for equipment you expected to get.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup spans from a value-oriented base model to Platinum, with ST-Line, Timberline, and King Ranch also mentioned. Base-trim versions leave you with fewer visual and luxury touches, while higher trims add more distinctive styling and richer cabin materials.
- Powertrain: You can shop a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder, an available hybrid based on a 3.3-liter V6, or a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. The four-cylinder emphasizes efficiency, the hybrid balances power and economy, and the V6 is the strongest choice for acceleration and towing.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assist, and evasive steering assist.
- Infotainment: The Explorer uses Sync 3 with either an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. Available features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, FordPass Connect, Ford+Alexa, satellite radio, navigation, wireless smartphone charging, and a surround-view camera system.
- Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged 2.3-liter engine returns up to 24 mpg in combined driving, the hybrid returns as much as 27 mpg combined, and the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 is rated at up to 21 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?
The 2022 Ford Explorer is offered in 8 trim levels: Base, XLT, ST-Line, Limited, Timberline, ST, Platinum, and King Ranch.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point if you want the Explorer’s core space and powertrain choices at the lowest starting point, but you give up the richer equipment and visual polish found higher up the range.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and can be paired with the sporty ST-Line treatment, giving you a more appealing balance of price and equipment.
- ST-Line: This trim adds a sportier look to the XLT formula, so it suits you if you want style without jumping all the way to the performance-focused ST.
- Limited: This is the trim to consider if you want access to the hybrid powertrain, making it a smart pick for buyers who care about efficiency and everyday versatility.
- Timberline: This is the choice for buyers who want the most rugged setup, with the content pointing to improved off-road geometry and extra ground clearance.
- ST: This is the performance-oriented trim, and it is the one to choose if you want the strongest acceleration and the available High-Performance package.
- Platinum: This is the upscale pick if you want a more luxurious Explorer and prefer a premium-feeling alternative to the King Ranch’s distinctive interior theme.
- King Ranch: This is the most distinctive luxury trim, with exclusive leather and a richly appointed cabin, but it is not the best choice if you want the hybrid powertrain.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, while Co-Pilot360 Assist+ is the safety-package upgrade to look for if you want more advanced driver assistance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Explorer?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and be ready to move when you find a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 9,637 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,098, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $28,098 sits slightly below last year's $31,817.
That price movement suggests the Explorer has become more accessible for buyers, which can help you if you are shopping now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability rather than on broad market momentum alone.
Because the model has strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal, well-kept examples should continue to attract interest. Higher trims and cleaner histories are likely to hold up better than neglected or heavily worn versions.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Ford Explorer safe?
The 2022 Ford Explorer earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. If you choose Co-Pilot360 Assist+, you also get adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assist, and evasive steering assist.
One caveat is that complete NHTSA crash-test ratings were not published for this model year in the source material, so you should lean on the IIHS result, the expert score, and the standard safety equipment when evaluating it.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines a broad trim range with strong safety ratings and multiple powertrain choices.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $24,017, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,098 average.
- It offers multiple powertrain options and strong handling.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping environment, the 2022 is the stronger primary pick because it combines solid inventory, strong owner satisfaction, and a meaningful price drop from last year. If your priority is saving money above all else, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly path, especially if you find one in good condition with the equipment you want.
