Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Ford Expedition 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Expedition stands out as a full-size SUV that combines strong presence with real substance. In expert testing, the twin-turbocharged Expedition was described as shining brightly, especially with the Stealth Edition treatment, and the vehicle drew attention for its paint color and wheels. That visual appeal is backed up by a powerful engine, spacious cabin, and impressive technology, making it easy to see why it can feel like more than just a large family hauler.
It is not without drawbacks, though. The 2022 Expedition’s weaknesses include poor fuel economy, a busy ride quality, and occasional technical glitches. Even so, the overall impression is that it is a terrific full-size SUV in nearly every respect, which makes it appealing to buyers who want size, comfort, and capability without giving up a polished, attention-getting look.

The vehicle has everything we could ask for plus some. You could compare it to a gmc Yukon slt. But you get more bang for your buck with the expedition when it comes to price and options

Compared to the Chevy Tahoe, which I drove, the 2022 Ford Expedition tows more, is more peppier, visibility is better through the windows, gets better gas mileage and is lighter. The video screen on the Limited is huge, almost too big. Good value, that is subjective, due to the high price compared to a few years ago. But Chevy, GMC and all the other big SUVs are also high priced.. The V-6 sounds good, but for some the V-8’s sound better.

If you find a listing below $40,406.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Ford Expedition a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Ford Expedition earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its towing capability, comfort for long trips, and spacious interior. The expert review also backs up the appeal with strong marks for powerful engine performance, impressive technology, and a roomy cabin.
The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy and a busy ride quality, plus occasional technical glitches. In practical terms, that means you should like this SUV most if you want a large, capable family hauler and can live with the running costs and some tech quirks.
With 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still opportunities to find value if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Ford Expedition reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, especially those who value comfort, towing, and a vehicle they can count on for long trips. The expert review also reinforces that sense of durability by emphasizing the Expedition’s huge cabin, strong turbocharged powertrain, and overall usefulness.
Ford’s maintenance and ownership experience can be appealing when the vehicle has been cared for properly, but used buyers should still pay close attention to service records and wear items because a large SUV like this can become expensive if deferred maintenance has piled up.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Expedition?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if it looks clean on the listing page. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the suspension, electronics, tires, brakes, and any signs of heavy towing or hard use. On a vehicle this large and tech-heavy, condition matters as much as mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes XL STX, XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum, plus the Timberline. Base versions miss some of the richer cabin and tech upgrades you get as you move up, while the Timberline adds standard 4WD, all-terrain tires, suspension modifications, more ground clearance, a skid plate, and Trail Turn Assist.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and some versions get a high-output tune. Fuel economy ranges from 17 mpg to 19 mpg in combined driving, and towing capacity runs from 9,000 pounds to 9,300 pounds depending on equipment.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a driver monitoring system, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder. Limited and above add Co-Pilot360 Assist+, while King Ranch and Platinum standardize Co-Pilot Assist 2.0.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 12-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, FordPass Connect with a Wi-Fi hotspot, natural voice recognition, and connected navigation. Sync 4A upgrades to a 15.5-inch touchscreen, and higher trims can add wireless smartphone charging and premium audio.
- Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy ranges from 17 mpg to 19 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 16.2 mpg on the evaluation loop.
Which 2022 Ford Expedition trim should I buy?
The 2022 Ford Expedition is offered in 6 trim levels: XL STX, XLT, Limited, King Ranch, Platinum, Timberline.
Here's the short version:
- XL STX: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Expedition’s size and capability without paying for the richer trim content. It gives you the core full-size SUV experience, but you’ll be giving up the more upscale equipment and advanced features found higher up the range.
- XLT: This is the logical step up if you want a better balance of equipment and price. It should suit you if you want more everyday comfort and convenience than the base trim without jumping into the pricier luxury-oriented versions.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it unlocks more of the Expedition’s desirable tech and comfort content, and it can be paired with the Stealth Edition treatment. If you want the sweet spot between price and features, this is the one to focus on.
- King Ranch: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and the standard Co-Pilot Assist 2.0 safety package. It also gets the adaptive damping suspension, which should help smooth out the ride compared with versions that don’t have it.
- Platinum: This is the top luxury-oriented choice, with the same standard Co-Pilot Assist 2.0 safety package and the most premium positioning in the lineup. It makes the most sense if you want the most polished Expedition experience and are willing to pay for it.
- Timberline: Pick this if you want the most off-road-focused version. It adds standard 4WD, all-terrain tires, suspension modifications, more ground clearance, a skid plate, and Trail Turn Assist.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard, while Co-Pilot360 Assist+ starts with Limited and Co-Pilot Assist 2.0 is standard on King Ranch and Platinum.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Expedition?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,274 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.55% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,406.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Expedition's resale value?
The current average of $40,389 sits slightly below last year's $47,825.
That price movement suggests the market has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintain the vehicle well, you may be better positioned than someone who paid closer to the prior-year average.
Because the Expedition still has strong demand from shoppers who want a large, capable SUV, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Buying below the current average can also give you a better cushion when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Ford Expedition safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford groups the Expedition’s driver-assistance features into three Co-Pilot360 collections. Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a driver monitoring system, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder. Starting with Limited, Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assist, speed-limit-sign recognition, intersection assist, and evasive steering assist. King Ranch and Platinum standardize Co-Pilot Assist 2.0, which adds a surround-view camera system, rear automatic emergency braking, and Active Park Assist 2.0.
The main caveat is that some of the more advanced safety tech is not standard on lower trims, so you need to shop carefully if those features matter to you. The lane-centering system also drew criticism in testing for inconsistent behavior, so it’s worth trying before you buy.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Expedition or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.55% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 adds updated infotainment tech and expanded driver-assistance content, including new-for-2022 safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $31,638, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $40,389 average.
- It is a strong choice for buyers who want a capable full-size SUV for towing and hauling.
The bottom line: If you want the newer tech, stronger market selection, and updated safety content, the 2022 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2021 is the smarter path, especially if you mainly want Expedition space and capability without paying for the latest updates.
