Overview

The Fiat 500X is a style-oriented subcompact SUV that does battle with the likes of the Jeep Renegade, the Mazda CX-30, and the MINI Countryman. It’s also the sole remaining model in Fiat’s United States lineup, following the departure of the 500, 500L, and 124 Spider. For the 2022 model year, the 500X gets a new Al-Fresco top retractable fabric roof panel and a Yacht Club Capri special edition.

Under the hood of every 500X is a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 177 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Unlike many of its competitors, the 500X comes standard with all-wheel drive (AWD). Fuel economy measures 24 mpg city, 30 highway, and 26 combined (on premium fuel), and the 500X gets an engine start-stop system to maximize efficiency.

The 500X’s four trims, Pop, Trekking, Sport, and Trekking Plus, carry over for 2022. The Pop comes standard with 17-inch wheels, heated and powered exterior mirrors, chrome exterior appointments, LED tail lights, a rear spoiler, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and 6 speakers. Unique exterior styling, leather upholstery, heated seats, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a color-contrasting roof, 19-inch wheels, a sport steering wheel, and LED front lighting come with the higher trims.

Based on the 500X Sport, the new-for-2022 Yacht Club Capri edition gets Venezia blue paint, 18-inch wheels, the Al-Fresco top, ivory leather seats with blue piping, and a wood-grained dash insert with satin-finished shifter.

One area in which the 500X fails to impress is its standard safety features, which consist solely of a rearview camera and a set of airbags. Forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring are all extra-cost options.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) haven’t published crash-test ratings for the 2022 Fiat 500X, but the IIHS gave the 2021 model a top “Good” score in its roof strength test.
