The BMW X5 originally launched in 1999 and remains one of BMW’s most popular models, selling upwards of 50,000 cars per year in normal sales years. 2023 is the fourth year of production for the G05 body, which was introduced in June of 2018 as a 2019 model.

The 2022 BMW X5 sDrive40i and X5 xDrive40i both feature a 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine that makes 335 hp. There is also a plug-in hybrid version of the X5, the xDrive45e. It has a 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder with 282 hp working in conjunction with a 111-hp synchronous electric motor. The X5 xDrive45e has a 24-kWh battery pack, which allows the vehicle to travel on electric power only for up to 30 miles.

Finally, the top-of-the-line BMW X5 M50i features a 4.4-liter twin-scroll turbocharged V8 delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.

All 2022 X5 models use an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The sDrive40i is rear-wheel drive (RWD), while models with the xDrive designation are all-wheel drive (AWD).

BMW has also introduced a new, limited-edition X5 Black Vermilion model for the 2022 model year. This is fundamentally an appearance package offered in very low production numbers (limited to 350 in the US): Black Vermillion endows an xDrive40i model with special touches such as Frozen Black Metallic paint, red bars in the kidney grille, darkened M Shadowline headlights (which cannot otherwise be optioned on that trim), and exclusive interior trim. It also adds upscale features like a glass shift knob, leather-clad dashboard, and Harman/Kardon stereo system.

The BMW X5 is largely a carryover model for 2022, and barring the addition of the Black Vermillion model, changes are minimal. A handful of option packages have been slightly revised, including the Convenience package no longer being available on the sDrive40i or xDrive40i trims.

All X5 models other than the M50i are offered in either xLine or M Sport trim, which adds $3,300 to the X5 sDrive40i and X5 xDrive40i and $2,950 to the X5 xDrive45e. The trim contains Shadowline exterior trim, 20-inch M Star-spoke bi-color wheels, sport seats, roof rails in high-gloss Shadowline, an aerodynamic kit, an M steering wheel, a panoramic moonroof, Live Cockpit with navigation, BMW’s Active Driving Assistant, and lane-departure warning.

Most X5 trims are available in nine colors: Alpine White and Jet Black are both free of charge. Other colors are available for a $650 upcharge. Most of the metallic colors are $0 options in the M50i, but Tanzanite Blue II Metallic and Ametrin Metallic are both $1,950.

Option packages include the Driving Assistance Professional Package ($1,700), Luxury Seating Package ($1,600), Parking Assistance Package ($800), Executive Package ($3,150), and Climate Comfort Package ($1,350).

The 2022 BMW X5 starts at $60,600 for the RWD X5 sDrive40i trim. Buyers who want AWD can consider the xDrive40i, which starts at $62,900, the plug-in hybrid xDrive45e at $63,700, or the higher-performance M50i xDrive at $82,800. The X5 Black Vermillion starts at $82,300.
