Used 2021 Volvo XC90 for Sale nearCharlotte, NC

How much does the 2021 Volvo XC90 cost?

Prices have softened 16.56% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,032 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Volvo XC90 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

It stands out as a refined three-row luxury SUV with a stylish design, premium interior materials, and a strong safety focus. For you, that means it fits best if you want a family hauler with a premium feel and a distinctive Scandinavian character rather than a sporty personality.

The main trade-offs are a cramped third row and sluggish performance, and the lack of USB-C ports may matter if you rely on newer devices. Even so, 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC90’s reliability case is helped by its emphasis on safety, its premium build, and its generally polished road manners. Its powertrains are built around a 2.0-liter four-cylinder setup, and the cabin is designed to feel quiet and upscale rather than overly complicated.

Volvo also includes a four-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and a four-year, 50,000-mile powertrain warranty, which adds some reassurance for used buyers. If you’re shopping used, the biggest long-term risk is that a luxury SUV with advanced tech and available hybrid hardware can be more expensive to keep in top shape if prior maintenance was inconsistent.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC90?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report on any XC90 you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a luxury SUV with advanced safety tech, infotainment, and available hybrid hardware. Focus on cabin condition, electronics behavior, and whether the vehicle feels as refined as it should on a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Momentum is the base model and doesn’t get the extra visual flair of the R-Design or Inscription, while the R-Design adds a sportier look and the Inscription is the flashiest trim with extra chrome and available 21-inch wheels.
• Powertrain: The XC90 uses 2.0-liter four-cylinder powertrains, with the T5 making 250 horsepower, the T6 making 316 hp, and the T8 plug-in hybrid delivering 400 hp with electric assist.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist is standard and combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering, alongside lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking.
• Infotainment: You get a 9-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, and a built-in WiFi hotspot, plus standard front USB-A and rear USB-C ports.
• Fuel efficiency: The base FWD T5 is rated at 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, while the AWD T5 is rated at 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway; the AWD T6 is rated at 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, and the T8 Recharge is rated at 27 mpg combined in hybrid mode with up to 18 miles of all-electric range.

Which 2021 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the value-oriented choice if you want the XC90’s core safety, style, and luxury feel without paying for the flashier appearance upgrades. It’s the trim to start with if you care most about getting the XC90 experience at the lowest entry point.
• R-Design: Choose this if you want a sportier look, including the gloss-black grille surround and standard 20-inch wheels. It adds visual attitude without changing the XC90’s fundamental mission.
• Inscription: This is the most upscale-feeling trim, with extra chrome trim and optional 21-inch wheels, making it the best fit if you want the most premium presentation.

Pilot Assist is standard, so even the lower trims include a strong safety and driver-assistance foundation.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,032 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.56% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 82.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $26,091, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $26,091 sits slightly below last year's $31,270.

That decline suggests the XC90 has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it’s time to sell. The model’s premium image and safety reputation should help support demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2021 XC90 received the highest “Top Safety Pick+” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings from NHTSA in frontal and side crash tests, plus a four-star rating in rollover testing.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The XC90 comes standard with Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering, along with lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking. That gives you a broad standard safety suite even before you move up the trim ladder.

One caveat is that the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ result applies to non-hybrid models, not the T8 plug-in hybrid. The non-hybrid XC90 also earned top “Good” scores in all IIHS crash tests, while headlights and LATCH child-seat anchors were rated “Acceptable.”

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.56% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds Care Key and a 112 mph limiter, reinforcing Volvo’s safety-first approach.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $22,444, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $26,091 average.
• It offers a polished, family-friendly feel with strong safety credentials.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $29,029, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $26,091 average.
• It adds a more sustainability-focused personality with available leather-free features.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and inventory, the 2021 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the better value play. If you want a newer-feeling XC90 with a more eco-minded angle, the 2022 is worth the extra money.
