What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not universal. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the drivetrain, electronics, and suspension, especially if the vehicle has larger wheels or higher mileage. It is also smart to confirm that the cabin tech and driver-assistance features work as expected, since those are major parts of the XC60 ownership experience.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The XC60’s trim structure ranges from T5 Momentum to R-Design and Inscription, with T6 and T8 versions adding more power and equipment. The base setup is already well equipped, but higher trims add more upscale appointments and, on the top end, larger wheels that can affect ride comfort.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an eight-speed automatic. T5 models make 250 horsepower, T6 models make 316 hp, and T8 models add an electric motor for 400 hp combined, with the Polestar Engineered version tuned to 415 hp combined. The T8 plug-in hybrid can drive up to 19 miles on electric power.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, run-off road protection, run-off road mitigation, and more. Pilot Assist is available, and it combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist.
• Infotainment: The XC60 uses Volvo’s Sensus system with a 9-inch portrait-style touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a WiFi hotspot are built in, and Volvo’s On Call app adds remote locking, remote starting, and maintenance reminders.
• Fuel efficiency: EPA figures range from 22 mpg city/29 mpg highway/25 mpg combined for the T5 FWD to 27 mpg combined for the T8 PHEV, with 57 MPGe combined in electric-only mode.

Which 2021 Volvo XC60 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 is offered in 8 trim levels: T5 FWD Momentum, T5 AWD Momentum, T5 R-Design, T5 Inscription, T6 AWD Momentum, T6 AWD R-Design, T6 AWD Inscription, T8 eAWD Inscription, T8 eAWD R-Design, T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered.

Here's the short version:

• T5 FWD Momentum: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the XC60 experience at the lowest price. It gives you the core luxury, safety, and tech foundation without paying for extra power or appearance upgrades.
• T5 AWD Momentum: Choose this if you want the same value-oriented setup but prefer all-wheel drive for added traction. It is the sensible step up if you live where weather or road conditions matter.
• T5 R-Design: This trim is for you if you want a sportier look and a more expressive feel without moving into the pricier six-cylinder or plug-in hybrid models. It adds style-focused appeal while staying relatively accessible.
• T5 Inscription: This is the better pick if comfort and upscale presentation matter more than sporty styling. It suits buyers who want the most polished version of the base powertrain.
• T6 AWD Momentum: This is the best-value upgrade if you want noticeably stronger performance without jumping all the way to the plug-in hybrid. It pairs the more powerful engine with a relatively restrained trim setup.
• T6 AWD R-Design: Pick this if you want stronger acceleration and a sportier personality together. It is the right fit for buyers who care about both performance and appearance.
• T6 AWD Inscription: This is the luxury-first choice in the non-hybrid lineup. It makes the most sense if you want the stronger engine and the most upscale cabin treatment.
• T8 eAWD Inscription: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid efficiency and strong power in a more comfort-oriented package. It is the most balanced T8 option for buyers focused on refinement.
• T8 eAWD R-Design: This trim blends plug-in hybrid capability with a sportier presentation. It is a good fit if you want efficiency but still care about visual flair.
• T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered: This is the enthusiast pick, with the most power in the lineup and the most distinctive character. It makes sense if you want the top performance-oriented XC60 and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package is a major strength across the lineup, and Pilot Assist is available if you want the added convenience of Volvo’s semi-autonomous driving system.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep distress pricing.

• Deal availability: 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 760 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 83.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,923, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC60's resale value?

The current average of $23,925 sits slightly below last year's $27,565.

That decline suggests the XC60 has become more affordable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy now, you are entering at a lower baseline than last year, which can help soften depreciation pressure later. Strong safety, comfort, and brand appeal should still support demand, especially among shoppers who want a premium SUV with a distinctive identity.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC60 safe?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 was awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the XC60 T5/T5 AWD and XC60 T6 AWD received five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, low- and high-speed collision mitigation, vehicle/cyclist/large animal detection, driver alert control, run-off road protection, run-off road mitigation, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, oncoming mitigation, front, side, and curtain airbags with a driver-side knee airbag, whiplash protection, rear park assist camera, power child locks, and care key.

Pilot Assist is available, and it combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist to help maintain speed and lane position. The main caveat is that the strongest crash-test praise applies to the XC60 as a whole, while the NHTSA five-star ratings are specifically noted for the T5/T5 AWD and T6 AWD versions.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC60 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines luxury-level appointments, cool Scandinavian style, exceptional safety features, and a lusty powertrain.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $27,384, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $23,925 average.
• It adds new mild-hybrid powertrains and an Android-based infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to spend more for newer tech and updated powertrains, the 2022 is the better path.
