Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon stands out as Volkswagen’s flagship sedan, and it leans into that role with a refined, upscale presentation. It arrives with upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance, giving it the feel of a showcase for the brand’s capabilities and technologies. Its stylish design and premium interior materials help it project a near-luxury character, while the available equipment can push it even further in that direction.
Practicality is part of the appeal, too, since the Arteon offers plenty of cargo space. It also keeps pricing below $50,000, which may make its upscale look and feature set more approachable than some buyers expect. The tradeoff is that it is described as poor value for money and poor fuel economy, so shoppers drawn to its design and refinement may still want to weigh those drawbacks carefully.

All the driver assistance features you would expect for a never vehicle are in this car minus a front facing camera. The digital dash is a great feature and the auto folding headlights should be on every car. The 268 hp engine is quiet and quick. Apparently subsequent years have a 300 hp engine but mine is fine, no complaints. Trunk is roomy as its a hatchback.

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,487 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,998 |
| Year-Round High | $23,179 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,186 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.33% |
Prices have softened 7.33% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 119 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?
Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
The 2021 Arteon is positioned as Volkswagen’s flagship sedan, and it leans into that role with upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance. It also offers plenty of cargo space and keeps pricing below $50,000, which makes its upscale presentation more approachable than many near-luxury alternatives.
The main trade-offs are poor value for money and poor fuel economy. If you want a stylish, premium-feeling sedan with a practical side, it fits that brief well; if your priority is maximum efficiency or the strongest bargain, you should shop carefully.
About 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Arteon is described as a showcase for Volkswagen’s capabilities and technologies, with a refined presentation and a well-finished cabin. Its performance setup is tuned for comfort and adaptability, and it cruises serenely while staying composed over rough pavement.
Volkswagen also emphasizes practical ownership touches, including standard Car-Net connectivity and a broad set of convenience and safety systems. The cost-effectiveness commentary also notes that the lineup is simple, which can make shopping and ownership easier to manage.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that its premium ambitions may not fully offset the brand’s weaker resale reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or a car with a lot of optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior damage, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re looking at.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is the simplest version, with front-wheel drive only, while the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line add more equipment and a more upscale feel. The base trim leaves out some of the higher-end comfort and convenience features found on the upper trims.
- Powertrain: The Arteon uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard on lower trims, while all-wheel drive is available or standard depending on trim.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-view camera. Higher trims add adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, park distance control, high beam control, travel assist, emergency assist, and dynamic road-sign display.
- Infotainment: You get a standard 10-inch Digital Cockpit display and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Car-Net connectivity is standard, and the upper trim adds a premium audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway/25 mpg combined for front-wheel drive and 20 mpg city/31 mpg highway/24 mpg combined for all-wheel drive.
Which 2021 Volkswagen Arteon trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Arteon’s core appeal at the lowest price. You still get the upscale design, the roomy cargo area, the digital cockpit, wireless smartphone integration, and the standard safety suite, so it covers the essentials well if you want the look and tech without stretching your budget.
- SEL R-Line: This is the best-value trim if you want a stronger mix of equipment and flexibility. It adds more available comfort and driver-assistance content, and it can be had with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, which broadens your choices.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the most luxurious version, with the richest feature set. It adds ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, a massaging driver’s seat, a premium audio system, and additional parking aids, so it suits you best if you want the most upscale Arteon experience.
The SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line include the broader driver-assistance package, while the base SE keeps the standard safety equipment but misses some of the more advanced features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to create opportunities.
- Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 119 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.33% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,998, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon's resale value?
The current average of $21,487 sits slightly below last year's $23,186.
That decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to move the car. The Arteon’s premium positioning and brand-image challenges can make resale more sensitive to condition, mileage, and equipment level.
If you buy one well and keep it in strong condition, you may be able to soften some of that depreciation pressure. A clean history and desirable trim can help support demand when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon safe?
The 2021 Arteon was recently awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips it with a broad safety package that includes eight airbags, anti-lock braking, tire pressure monitoring, electronic stability control, automatic post-collision braking, an intelligent crash response system, and a reactive hood. Standard active safety features also include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-view camera.
Higher trims add adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, park distance control, high beam control, travel assist, emergency assist, and dynamic road-sign display. The SEL Premium R-Line adds park assist, rear park distance control, and an overhead view camera.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Arteon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.33% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It brings a more distinctive design and stronger performance character.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the better pick if you want the more affordable route into the Arteon’s upscale look, strong safety, and premium-feeling cabin. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer take with a different character, the 2022 is worth a look; if you’re price-sensitive, the 2021’s softer pricing makes it the smarter shopping target.
