CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Tesla Model S

Summary
With 484 currently listed for sale and an average price of $45,736, 28.1% of 2021 Tesla Model Ss for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Tesla Model S 5 / 5 stars.
86.6% of 2021 Model S models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Tesla Model S stands out as the year of Tesla’s biggest update yet, the “Palladium” refresh. It brought minor exterior design changes, an all-new interior with a yoke steering wheel, and an overhauled powertrain with a new battery pack and motors that increased efficiency, range, and power. That combination keeps the Model S feeling distinctive even among luxury EVs: it is still defined by advanced technology, strong performance, and the kind of acceleration that has long been part of its appeal.
For 2021, the Model S was offered as the Long Range and Plaid. The Long Range used dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, while the Plaid added three electric motors and standard AWD, with 1,020 horsepower. Range was listed at 405 miles for the Long Range and 348 miles for the Plaid. Standard equipment was also generous, including vegan leatherette seats, heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, adaptive air suspension, a glass roof, wireless phone charging, a premium 22-speaker, 560-watt audio system, adaptive cruise control, and a blind spot monitor.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not available at all, and some buyers remain unsure about the yoke steering wheel design. Even so, the 2021 Model S is appealing for shoppers who want a luxury electric sedan with standout acceleration, a high-tech cabin, and a long list of standard features.

If your looking for the absolute best tech in a vehicle, you will find it in a Tesla. I felt the year, miles, and condition was a fair price. It is extremely hard to compare any Tesla to any other vehicle brands out there. Tesla did a very good job at being original. This is my second Tesla . My first was a Model 3 Performance and now I have a Model S Plaid. For me, it would be very hard to go back to the other brands.

The car is fantastic, truly unlike any other car, and it just gets better with updates. I’m neutral on the yoke, but I will probably replace it at some point. Aside from the steering. wheel/yoke, it is the best car that I’ve ever driven. Between the auto pilot and full self driving, to the media , safety features, and incredible acceleration, I simply don’t think there is a better car you can buy.

2021 marked the first re-fresh of the Model S since its inception. My previous Model S was a 2016 P90D ludicrous. The 2021 felt like an entirely different car. With several major upgrades: • The seats were substantially upgraded providing more stability during cornering, heating and cooling seat ventilation was added. The whole interior was upgraded. • New “ductless” HVAC system that allows you to direct air virtually anywhere—crazy. • The dash was shortened to move the driver closer to the windshield increasing visibility • The suspension was improved with more options to customize. • The sound system was significantly upgraded to 950+ watts and 23 speakers—it is truly an amazing sound that rivals any headphones I have used. • Significantly quieter cabin with a new window system and self-cancelling noise reduction that lowers tire noise.

How much does the 2021 Tesla Model S cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $45,855 |
| Year-Round Low | $45,429 |
| Year-Round High | $47,382 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $45,999 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.31% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 477 listings available, which gives you a moderate amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2021 Tesla Model S a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the incredible acceleration, the quality of the interior, and the state-of-the-art technology, while the yoke steering wheel remains a recurring point of hesitation for some shoppers. For you, that means this model year fits best if you want a luxury electric sedan with standout performance, a high-tech cabin, and a long list of standard features. With 30.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on the driving experience, the quality of the interior, and the overall upgrade from the refresh. That kind of response suggests you can expect a vehicle that many owners feel good about keeping for the long term. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the basic appeal and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been well cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still prioritize a history report so you can confirm accident status, title history, and any major repairs before you commit. After that, focus your inspection on overall condition, since a used luxury EV should feel consistent in its cabin quality, controls, and driving behavior. If possible, pay close attention to how the car presents in person so you can spot signs of heavy use or neglect that may not show up in the listing.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Tesla Model S?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 477 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 84.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $45,429, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $45,855 sits slightly below last year's $45,999.
That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable, which can help you plan a future sale without worrying about a sharp drop in value. Because prices have held close to last year’s level, the model appears to have steady demand rather than a volatile pricing pattern. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you should be in a reasonable position when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2021 if you want the refreshed Model S experience with strong owner satisfaction, stable pricing, and a healthy share of clean listings. If your priority is stretching your budget, a nearby year may be worth considering, but the 2021 remains the better fit when you want the updated cabin, strong performance, and a more current ownership experience.
