CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Tesla Model S

Summary
With 534 currently listed for sale and an average price of $46,452.00, 27.9% of 2021 Tesla Model Ss for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Tesla Model S 5 / 5 stars.
84.8% of 2021 Model S models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Tesla Model S stands out as the model’s biggest update yet, bringing the “Palladium” refresh with minor exterior design changes and an all-new interior centered around a yoke steering wheel. It also received an overhauled powertrain with a new battery pack and motors, which Tesla says brought increased efficiency, range, and power. For buyers, that combination is the core appeal: the Model S remains a luxury electric sedan that emphasizes cutting-edge technology and strong performance rather than traditional automotive convention.
In this version, the base Long Range model uses dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, while the Plaid adds three electric motors and standard AWD. Tesla rates the Long Range at 405 miles of range and the Plaid at 348 miles, and the Plaid is listed with 1,020 horsepower. Standard equipment is extensive, including vegan leatherette seats, heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, adaptive air suspension, a glass roof, wireless phone charging, a premium 22-speaker audio system, adaptive cruise control, and a blind spot monitor. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available at all, and some shoppers may also be hesitant about the yoke steering wheel design.
Owners of the 2021 Tesla Model S are especially enthusiastic about its acceleration, interior quality, and advanced technology, which matches the car’s overall mission well. That said, the same feedback also reflects one of its more polarizing traits: the steering yoke. For shoppers who want a fast, high-tech electric sedan with a distinctive cabin and a long list of standard features, the 2021 Model S remains one of Tesla’s most recognizable offerings.

If your looking for the absolute best tech in a vehicle, you will find it in a Tesla. I felt the year, miles, and condition was a fair price. It is extremely hard to compare any Tesla to any other vehicle brands out there. Tesla did a very good job at being original. This is my second Tesla . My first was a Model 3 Performance and now I have a Model S Plaid. For me, it would be very hard to go back to the other brands.

The car is fantastic, truly unlike any other car, and it just gets better with updates. I’m neutral on the yoke, but I will probably replace it at some point. Aside from the steering. wheel/yoke, it is the best car that I’ve ever driven. Between the auto pilot and full self driving, to the media , safety features, and incredible acceleration, I simply don’t think there is a better car you can buy.

2021 marked the first re-fresh of the Model S since its inception. My previous Model S was a 2016 P90D ludicrous. The 2021 felt like an entirely different car. With several major upgrades: • The seats were substantially upgraded providing more stability during cornering, heating and cooling seat ventilation was added. The whole interior was upgraded. • New “ductless” HVAC system that allows you to direct air virtually anywhere—crazy. • The dash was shortened to move the driver closer to the windshield increasing visibility • The suspension was improved with more options to customize. • The sound system was significantly upgraded to 950+ watts and 23 speakers—it is truly an amazing sound that rivals any headphones I have used. • Significantly quieter cabin with a new window system and self-cancelling noise reduction that lowers tire noise.

CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2021 Tesla Model S prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2021 Tesla Model S cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $46,253 |
| Year-Round Low | $45,246.94 |
| Year-Round High | $47,386.47 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $45,233 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +2.26% |
Prices are up 2.26% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 528 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $45,246.94, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Tesla Model S a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 5/5, which points to very strong satisfaction with the ownership experience.
The review summary consistently highlights incredible acceleration, high-quality interior materials, and state-of-the-art technology. That lines up well with the Model S’s role as a luxury electric sedan for you if you want cutting-edge features and performance rather than a traditional luxury-car feel.
With 28.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively while focusing on the version that best fits your priorities.
Is the 2021 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a car that feels reliable in the sense that owners are happy with its long-term ownership experience, especially when it comes to the driving experience and overall quality. The feedback also suggests you can count on the Model S to deliver the kind of performance and technology buyers expect from it.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the ownership sentiment and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been well cared for and remains in strong condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then inspect the car closely for signs of prior damage, inconsistent repairs, or wear that doesn’t match the mileage. Because this model is heavily tech-focused, you’ll also want to pay close attention to the condition and operation of the interior, controls, and other high-use features.
A careful pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re shopping for a car that’s supposed to feel premium and modern. Focus on overall condition, not just the headline performance specs.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Tesla Model S?
This is a seller’s market, so you should act selectively and be ready to move when you find the right car.
- Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 528 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.26% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 85.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $45,246.94, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $46,253 sits slightly above last year's $45,233.
That upward move suggests the market is still willing to pay for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A stronger current price can help support your exit value, especially if you buy carefully and keep the car in good condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.26% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the refreshed Model S experience, the 2021 is the year to focus on because it combines strong owner satisfaction with a market that still supports demand. If you’re more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and look for the best combination of condition, history, and asking price rather than chasing the newest refresh alone.
