CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Nissan Frontier
Summary
With 105 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,997, 27.6% of 2021 Nissan Frontier listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Nissan Frontier 4.5 / 5 stars.
100.0% of 2021 Nissan Frontier listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Nissan Frontier stands out as the final year of the second generation, and it benefits from the most significant late-cycle update in that run: a new 3.8-liter V6 paired with a nine-speed transmission. That engine brought 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque, giving the truck stronger performance than earlier versions of the same generation. It also remained a practical midsize pickup, with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive available and an average used price around $22,500.
For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the Frontier has a reputation for being a reliable and versatile work truck, and it has generally been priced lower than the Toyota Tacoma. The 2021 model also offers the kind of capability many truck shoppers want, with towing capacity up to 6,500 lbs and fuel economy estimates of 18/24 mpg city/highway for rear-wheel drive or 17/23 mpg with four-wheel drive. Owners have also praised its smooth and quiet ride, good value, decent towing ability, and solid handling.
There are tradeoffs, though. The 2021 Frontier is not as fuel efficient as some rivals, and the second-generation truck’s cabin is not especially refined or spacious compared with some competitors. The transmission has also drawn criticism from some owners for shifting poorly and causing wheel hop. Even so, for shoppers who want a dependable, reasonably priced pickup with proven utility, the 2021 Nissan Frontier remains an appealing choice.

A great ride with many good features, but note this is an SV with the value package. The value package adds a lot to the truck.

Quiet and smooth ride. Easy transfer from 4x2 to 4x4. No car play but that’s not important to me. It’s comparable to Toyota Tacoma. V6 310HP

Is the 2021 Nissan Frontier a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Nissan Frontier earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners repeatedly praise the smooth and quiet ride, good value, and decent towing capability, and many also like its handling and usefulness for outdoor activities. For you, that makes it a practical midsize pickup if you want a truck that balances everyday drivability with real utility. With 34.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Nissan Frontier reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to a reliable, dependable truck that many owners feel comfortable counting on for regular use. That said, some drivers mention transmission behavior as a concern, so you should pay close attention to how the truck shifts during a test drive. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the drivetrain feels consistent and well maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Nissan Frontier?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with a history report to confirm the truck’s background and look for any prior damage or title issues. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the transmission behavior, since some owners have reported shifting concerns. It also makes sense to focus on overall condition and maintenance records, especially if you plan to use the truck for towing or regular work.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Nissan Frontier?
This is a selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,260 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.76% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,456, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Nissan Frontier's resale value?
The current average of $22,399 sits slightly below last year's $23,034.
That softer pricing suggests the truck has become a bit more accessible for buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, the current market shows that value is holding reasonably well, but not appreciating. If you buy at the right price and keep the truck in strong condition, you should be in a better position when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 Nissan Frontier or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.76% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,127, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $22,399 average.
- It offers a simple, rugged pickup with a newly updated powertrain.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $26,640, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $22,399 average.
- It brings a redesigned cabin with more modern comfort and technology.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around path if you want a strong mix of value, owner satisfaction, and available inventory. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the price-sensitive alternative, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the newer redesign and can stretch for it.
