Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Tucson stands out as the final model year of its generation, and that timing gives it a strong value proposition. It was introduced for the 2016 model year, and the test-drive summary says Hyundai loaded it up with plenty of tech and safety features while offering it at a competitive price. That combination makes it appealing to shoppers who want a compact SUV that feels well equipped without chasing the newest redesign.
It also has a few clear everyday strengths. The Tucson is described as stylish, comfortable, and easy to use, and owners echo that it delivers comfort, good handling, and impressive features for the price. At the same time, it is not the choice for buyers who prioritize performance: the test-drive data calls out sluggish performance, an underwhelming base engine, and noise. Even so, for shoppers focused on value, comfort, and straightforward technology, the 2021 Tucson has a lot to offer.

CPO so 10/10,000 warranty still valid. Reliable car, nice features, good gas mileage, good value. Pickup lacking but that’s because I was driving a v8 prior.

I was looking for a car that my family could comfortably ride in, and the Tucson was the perfect car for that. Its easy to drive and the ride quality is pretty good. Above all, the long warranty allows you to drive with confidence. However, drivers who seek the fun of driving may not be interested. I think I purchased it for my own purposes.

I really like the blind spot warning signal and the back up camera as well. I thought this car was a great price for only 1 owner, no accidents & low mileage. This car was missing the cargo pkg that should have came with the car as promised. I didn’t shop around for any other models, since this was the only one I wanted. My 2014 Hyundai Tucson Limited, I bought brand new and would have kept it for the rest of my life, but on March 20, 2023 it was totaled in an accident.

How much does the 2021 Hyundai Tucson cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,494 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,173 |
| Year-Round High | $18,906 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,910 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.49% |
Prices have softened 7.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,595 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Tucson earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, great handling, and impressive features for the price. The overview also points to a stylish, comfortable, and easy-to-use compact SUV that feels well equipped without chasing the newest redesign.
The trade-offs are clear: the expert notes sluggish performance, an underwhelming base engine, and noise. That makes it a better fit if you want value, comfort, and straightforward technology rather than a sporty drive.
With 34.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to find a strong-value example.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with comfort and features that owners can count on over time. The expert notes also support that impression by describing a refined ride and a well-rounded ownership experience.
Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty adds another layer of confidence for used buyers. Even so, you should still verify maintenance history and overall condition, since long-term ownership risk depends heavily on how the previous owner treated the vehicle.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Tucson?
At 74.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings with similar prices.
Focus on condition, equipment completeness, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re considering. Owner feedback suggests some shoppers expected more equipment, so it pays to verify the exact build before you buy.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is the base trim and comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, manually adjustable front seats, a digital driver information display, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features like heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof.
- Powertrain: The base 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 161 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.4-liter four-cylinder makes 181 hp and 175 lb-ft. The base engine feels underwhelming, so the 2.4-liter is the better choice if you want more relaxed everyday performance.
- Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver drowsiness monitoring. Adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beams, a 360-degree parking monitor, and blind-spot monitoring require upper-tier trims.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch touchscreen is available, and wireless device charging is offered on higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient version returns 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The AWD version of the 2.0-liter model returns 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Hyundai Tucson trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Tucson is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited, and Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the core Tucson experience with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the standard safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features.
- Value: This trim adds a more appealing everyday mix with heated front seats, an eight-way power driver’s seat, LED headlight accents, roof rails, HD radio, satellite radio, and a one-touch driver window. It looks like the best-value step up if you want more comfort without jumping too far in price.
- SEL: This trim adds 18-inch wheels, upgraded exterior accents, a rear-seat USB outlet, and dual-zone automatic climate control. It’s the right middle ground if you want a more polished cabin and better rear-seat usability.
- Sport: This trim brings 19-inch wheels, LED head-and-taillights, fog lights, a hands-free power liftgate, wireless device charging, and an Infinity premium audio system. It suits you if you want a more upscale feel and more convenience features.
- Limited: This trim adds a 360-degree camera system, integrated side-mirror turn signals, chrome exterior accents, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and an eight-way power front-passenger seat. It’s the pick if you want a more premium Tucson without going all the way to the top.
- Ultimate: This is the most feature-rich version, with an 8-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, rain-sensing wipers, a color trip computer, and a panoramic sunroof. Choose it if you want the most equipment and don’t mind paying for it.
For safety, features like adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beams, a 360-degree parking monitor, and blind-spot monitoring are reserved for upper-tier trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Tucson?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,595 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,173, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson's resale value?
The current average of $17,494 sits slightly below last year's $18,910.
That price movement suggests the Tucson has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry cost gives you more room to hold value over time, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim in strong condition.
Because the market has softened, your resale outcome will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and trim desirability. A clean, well-maintained example should be easier to move later than one with accident history or missing equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Tucson safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Tucson earns a five-star rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver drowsiness monitoring. Upper trims add adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beams, a 360-degree parking monitor, and blind-spot monitoring.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Tucson or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It’s the final model year of the generation, so you get a well-developed version with plenty of tech and safety features at a competitive price.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,469, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,494 average.
- It brings a redesigned shape with more room inside.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it combines lower pricing with strong equipment and solid owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to spend more for a redesign and extra space, the 2022 is the better path.
