CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Elantra
overall

Summary
With 224 currently listed for sale near Dallas, TX and an average price of $15,721, 20.5% of 2021 Hyundai Elantras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Elantra 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.83 / 10.
100.0% of 2021 Elantra models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The redesigned 2021 Hyundai Elantra stands out by blending style, sophistication, space, and sportiness in a compact-car package. It is also presented as proof that a car in this class can deliver performance, technology, and sophistication without moving up to a luxury vehicle. That combination gives it a broader appeal than many shoppers expect from an everyday sedan.
Behind the wheel, the Elantra is described as fun to drive, and its technology is a clear strength. It is also positioned as an excellent value for money, which helps explain why it can feel like a more upscale choice without the matching price tag. Owners echo that value story, while also praising its smooth ride, good fuel economy, and comfortable seating.
The tradeoffs are worth noting. Its design may be polarizing, and the interior materials are described as feeling cheap. Some owners also wish for more features such as a moonroof on higher models, which suggests the Elantra’s appeal is strongest when buyers prioritize style, efficiency, comfort, and value over a more premium cabin presentation.

The car is good but, a part of the front bumper is detached, both of the right rims are in severe condition, with one missing 6 inches of the rim, and the other severely scratched and dented and the tires don’t fit on the rims.

I love this car! Rides so smooth and has power too. Gets great gas mileage and feels like u are in a much more expensive car. The seats are comfortable and it truly is a very pleasant driving experience. This is the type of car that makes u want to go for a drive for no reason. Def would recommend this car to anyone!!

The expert review reinforces that sense of confidence by describing the car as quiet in normal driving and well tuned for everyday commuting.
You also get a strong ownership cushion from the warranty and service coverage, including a long powertrain warranty, roadside assistance, and free scheduled maintenance. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior wear, maintenance history, and condition match the car’s otherwise strong reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?
At 69.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, tires, and interior wear. Because the car’s appeal depends heavily on condition and equipment, it’s smart to focus on how well the cabin, tech, and driving feel have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin gets nicer and higher-tech as you move up the trim ladder, and the Limited stands out for its more upscale look and feel. Base versions use traditional instrumentation, while higher trims add more premium design touches and a more polished interior presentation.
- Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT, while the hybrid pairs a 1.6-liter Atkinson-cycle engine with an electric motor and a six-speed DCT. The standard engine is fine around town, while the hybrid adds immediate torque and stronger efficiency.
- Safety package: Every version includes SmartSense, with forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, driver attention warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Higher-level safety upgrades add cyclist detection, junction turning assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist.
- Infotainment: SE, SEL, and N Line trims use an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Limited trims step up to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and a 10.25-inch digital instrument screen, but wireless smartphone integration is lost with that larger display.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 35 mpg in combined driving with 17-inch wheels, the hybrid SEL is rated at 54 mpg combined, the hybrid Limited is rated at 50 mpg combined, and the N Line is rated at 28 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, SEL, N Line, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the simplest path into the redesigned Elantra, with the core styling and standard safety tech that define the car. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way to get the new design and don’t need the extra convenience features found higher up.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday equipment while staying close to the heart of the lineup. It also unlocks the hybrid powertrain option, which makes it the trim to watch if you want efficiency and flexibility.
- N Line: Choose this if you want the sportier personality. It brings the turbocharged engine, a manual transmission, sport suspension tuning, quicker steering, larger brakes, and a more engaging driving experience.
- Limited: This is the trim to buy if you want the most upscale cabin and the biggest tech upgrade. It adds the 10.25-inch infotainment setup, digital gauge display, navigation, ambient lighting, and a more premium interior presentation.
Safety-wise, every trim gets SmartSense, so you do not need to move up the lineup just to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?
The market looks moderately favorable if you’re a selective buyer.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,016 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.29% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,364.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $16,183 sits slightly below last year's $16,563.
That softer pricing suggests the model is still accessible on the used market, which can help you buy in at a reasonable level. For a future seller, the current trend means you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim rather than broad market momentum alone.
The good news is that strong owner satisfaction can support demand when it’s time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Every 2021 Elantra comes with SmartSense, Hyundai’s driver-assistance suite. Standard features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, driver attention warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning.
Higher-level safety upgrades add cyclist detection, junction turning assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist. That means the core safety package is broad, but some of the more advanced features are reserved for higher trims or configurations.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The redesign brings a more upscale feel, stronger tech, and a more distinctive driving experience.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $13,524, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $16,183 average.
- It adds free scheduled maintenance, improved fuel economy ratings, and new standard safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $17,270, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $16,183 average.
- It continues the redesign’s stylish look with a roomy cabin and strong standard safety tech.
The bottom line: If you want the best blend of style, tech, and value, the 2021 is the sweet spot. If your priority is the lowest purchase price, the 2020 is the better budget play. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer example, the 2022 is the natural step up.
