CarGurus Analysis: 2021 GMC Terrain

Summary
With 2,533 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,353, 32.8% of 2021 GMC Terrains for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 GMC Terrain 5 / 5 stars.
74.5% of 2021 Terrain models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 GMC Terrain stands out as a compact SUV that leans more toward comfort, value, and everyday usability than outright performance. It offers a roomy cabin for four adults, or five at a pinch, and its smooth ride and fuel efficiency are recurring strengths. Owners also tend to appreciate the stylish interior and the generous feature set, which helps the Terrain feel well equipped for the money.
For 2021, the Terrain’s powertrain lineup was simplified to the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, so buyers looking at this model year get a straightforward setup rather than a wide range of choices. That engine is paired with either a continuously variable automatic transmission in front-wheel-drive models or an eight-speed automatic with all-wheel drive, and all-wheel-drive versions also gain a higher towing capacity. The Terrain’s safety equipment is another highlight, with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, enhanced automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian and bicyclist braking, intersection automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic braking, reverse automatic braking, side bicyclist alert, and blind zone steering assist.
The main tradeoff is cargo space. The Terrain has 30 cubic feet behind the rear seats and up to 64 cubic feet with them folded, which is smaller than some key rivals. Some owners also mention minor omissions, including the lack of a standard auto wiper feature and a desire for stronger blind spot protection. Even so, the 2021 GMC Terrain remains appealing for shoppers who want a comfortable, well-equipped small SUV with good efficiency and a polished feel.

Very nice interior. Excellent options. We went with a black on black model but would have purchased this one if the other had not been available.

I absolutely adore my Terrain! I love everything about it. Not too big, not too small. Zero complaints. If I did have to make a suggestion I would say blind spot protection, and maybe a bigger screen that shows your speed but not deal breakers and simply just suggestions :)

I love the Terrain! It drives great and has a smoothest ride. It also is good on gas.

How much does the 2021 GMC Terrain cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,416 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,335 |
| Year-Round High | $20,309 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,308 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.31% |
Prices have softened 9.31% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,527 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2021 GMC Terrain a good car?
Yes — the 2021 GMC Terrain earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise the stylish interior, the generous feature set, the smooth ride, and the fuel efficiency. The Terrain also fits well if you want a comfortable, well-equipped compact SUV for everyday use rather than a performance-focused model.
With 32.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2021 GMC Terrain reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes dependable everyday use, with repeated praise for the smooth ride, fuel efficiency, and overall value. That combination suggests the Terrain has the kind of trouble-free character many used buyers want from a long-term ownership choice.
For used buyers, the main risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about finding a well-kept example with clean history and consistent maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Terrain?
At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the listing price looks especially attractive. Focus on condition details that matter in daily use, including signs of prior bodywork, interior wear, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the seller’s description.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Terrain?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,527 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.31% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,335, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 GMC Terrain's resale value?
The current average of $18,416 sits slightly below last year's $20,308.
That softer pricing can help you buy more affordably now, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, a clean history and strong condition will matter more because buyers will have plenty of comparable listings to choose from.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $22,031, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $18,416 average.
- It adds an AT4 trim with standard all-wheel drive and a more rugged look.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the stronger starting point because pricing is softer and inventory is broad. If you’re willing to pay more for the 2022’s added rugged styling and standard AWD on the AT4, that newer year may be worth a look. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2021 is the more practical path.
