Is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

It stands out as a heavy-duty work truck that can still serve daily duty, with serious towing and hauling ability paired with everyday comfort and convenience. The truck also brings multiple powertrain options, easy-to-use technology, and plenty of cargo space, which broadens its usefulness if you need one vehicle to work hard and stay approachable.

The trade-offs are clear: its design may be polarizing, and visibility over the front hood is poor.

With 30.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Silverado 3500HD is built around serious capability, and the expert assessment reinforces that it delivers on heavy-duty expectations while still offering practical day-to-day usability. Its powertrains are described as making terrific power, and the diesel setup benefits from a 10-speed automatic that helps keep the engine in the ideal gear for optimal performance.

The truck’s five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty also supports ownership confidence. If you buy used, the main long-term risk is making sure the truck was maintained and equipped as expected, since heavy-duty use can magnify wear.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a thorough inspection, especially on a truck that may have been used for towing or hauling. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the equipment matches the listing. Because this model is large and work-oriented, it’s worth paying extra attention to visibility-related comfort and any wear tied to frequent trailering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The W/T starts with two USB ports, vinyl seat trim, two-tier trailering mirrors, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The LT adds cloth seating, body-color door handles, Chevy’s EZ lift-and-lower tailgate, a 4.2-inch driver information display, an integrated trailer brake controller, a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen. The LTZ adds chrome exterior accents, leather upholstery, heated front seats, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, 120-volt wall-style power outlets, and side mirrors that extend and have integrated turn signals. The High Country adds heated and ventilated front seats, chrome side steps, a Bose premium sound system, and a spray-in bed-liner.
• Powertrain: You get a standard 6.6-liter V8 gas engine with 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, or an optional Duramax turbodiesel 6.6-liter V8 with 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. Both can be paired with rear-wheel drive or available four-wheel drive with low range, and the diesel’s 10-speed automatic helps keep it in the ideal gear for optimal performance.
• Safety package: The truck comes standard with a backup camera and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Forward collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree parking camera system are available only as extra-cost items.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen, while upgraded trims get an 8-inch touchscreen and the High Country adds navigation. The system is designed to be easy to use and includes hard buttons and dials, plus a helpful home button.
• Fuel efficiency: Drivers can expect fuel economy between 12 and 15 mpg.

Which 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD trim should I buy?

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is offered in 4 trim levels: W/T, LT, LTZ, and High Country.

Here's the short version:

• W/T: This is the most affordable way into the lineup, and it gives you the core work-truck essentials: vinyl seating, trailering mirrors, USB ports, and the standard 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It makes sense if you want the Silverado 3500HD’s capability without paying for comfort extras.
• LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds cloth seating, the EZ lift-and-lower tailgate, an integrated trailer brake controller, a WiFi hotspot, and the larger 8-inch touchscreen. If you want a more livable truck without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
• LTZ: This trim is the step up if you want a more upscale cabin and more towing convenience, thanks to leather upholstery, heated front seats, remote start, dual-zone climate control, and the advanced trailering system. It suits buyers who tow often and want more comfort on long drives.
• High Country: This is the luxury-oriented choice, with heated and ventilated front seats, chrome side steps, a Bose premium sound system, spray-in bed-liner, and navigation. It’s the right pick if you want the most comfort and convenience the Silverado 3500HD offers.

For safety, the base truck includes a backup camera and front- and side-impact airbags, while many driver-assistance features remain optional across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,111 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 80.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $46,678, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD's resale value?

The current average of $46,678 sits slightly below last year's $49,264.

That price movement suggests the market has eased, which can help you buy more truck for the money today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the truck was equipped and maintained.

Because heavy-duty trucks appeal to a focused buyer pool, well-kept examples with the right configuration should hold demand better than neglected ones. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD safe?

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Silverado comes standard with a backup camera and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. For safety features such as forward collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, you’ll have to pay extra. You’ll also have to shell out for the front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree parking camera system, which are especially helpful given the truck’s size.

The main caveat is that several useful driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard, so you’ll want to verify exactly what a used truck includes before you buy.

Should I buy a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines serious towing and hauling ability with everyday comfort and convenience, while also offering multiple powertrain options and easy-to-use technology.

The bottom line: The 2021 Silverado 3500HD makes the most sense if you want a heavy-duty truck that balances capability with everyday usability and you can find one with the right equipment at a fair price. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a well-kept lower-priced example can be a smart buy, but you should be selective about condition and options.
