Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 3 Series stands out as a luxury sedan that blends BMW’s traditional sporty character with a stronger emphasis on comfort and convenience than earlier generations. It is also part of a lineage that helped redefine what a luxury car could be, and its current form continues to appeal to buyers who want a sedan with nimble driving dynamics and a reputation for solid engineering.
For 2021, the biggest change is the addition of the 330e plug-in hybrid model to the lineup. That gives the 3 Series an extra layer of appeal for shoppers interested in efficiency without giving up the sedan format. BMW also offers other versions in the lineup, and the car’s strengths include great handling and impressive technology.
At the same time, the 2021 BMW 3 Series is described as competent but unremarkable, and advanced safety features are not standard. That makes it a strong choice for buyers who value driving feel and a polished overall package, but less compelling if standard safety equipment is a top priority.

Extremely responsive car with Good fuel economy. Driving assist system is extremely helpful as well. The audio is somewhat lacking (speakers) but NOT a deterrent to the car at all.

The car is beautiful, but I couldn’t buy it because it was making noises when I drove it. I can’t buy a car that I need to bring to the shop as soon as I get it.

How much does the 2021 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,904 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,848 |
| Year-Round High | $27,895 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,901 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.74% |
Prices have softened 10.74% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,490 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2021 BMW 3 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the exceptional handling, powerful performance, luxurious interior, and safety features. They also frequently mention fuel economy and trunk space, which broadens the car’s appeal beyond just driving enjoyment.
The trade-offs are that the audio system and mechanical noises drew some criticism, and the expert review says the car is competent but not especially engaging in this generation. In practical terms, you’re looking at a sedan that fits well if you want a polished luxury package with strong driving dynamics and useful tech, especially if comfort and convenience matter as much as sportiness.
With 32.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free enough to inspire strong loyalty, with many drivers saying they trust it for the long haul. The expert review also emphasizes solid engineering and a strong sense of chassis solidity, which supports the impression of a well-built sedan.
BMW’s warranty coverage includes four years or 50,000 miles, and the brand includes four years of roadside assistance. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a premium sedan can become expensive if prior maintenance or repairs were deferred.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 3 Series?
At 71.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows signs of uneven panel fit, paint mismatch, or suspension wear. Focus on how the car drives, how the electronics behave, and whether the cabin shows signs of heavy use, since condition can vary meaningfully from one listing to another.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The standard Sport Line trim package comes with 18-inch wheels, while the optional M Sport trim package adds M 19-inch wheels and blue-painted brake calipers. The cabin uses synthetic Sensatec material as standard, and leather upholstery is optional, so base cars may feel less upscale than you expect.
- Powertrain: The 330i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 255 horsepower, the 330e plug-in hybrid combines that engine with electric assist for 288 hp, and the M340i steps up to a turbo inline-six with 382 hp. All versions use an eight-speed automatic, and rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive are both available.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning are standard. The Driving Assistant Package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Driving Assistant Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automated lane centering, stop-and-go capability, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Active Side Collision Avoidance.
- Infotainment: The standard system includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. Gasoline models get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the 330e only gets CarPlay; Live Cockpit Professional adds a digital instrument cluster and navigation, and a head-up display is available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 330i is rated at 26 mpg city and 36 mpg highway with rear-wheel drive, while the 330e plug-in hybrid is rated at 75 MPGe in electric mode with 23 miles of electric range for the rear-wheel-drive version.
Which 2021 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW 3 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the core choice if you want the traditional 3 Series formula at the lowest entry point. It delivers the 255-horsepower turbo four, strong fuel economy, and the standard infotainment setup, making it the best-value trim for most shoppers.
- 330e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid efficiency and can plug in regularly. It adds electric driving capability and stronger combined output, but the expert review notes that hybrid operation can feel less smooth and the gasoline-only 330i is the better fit if you won’t charge often.
- M340i: Pick this if you want the most performance in the lineup. It brings the turbo inline-six and the quickest acceleration, but it is the most expensive path and is best suited to buyers who care most about speed and power.
For safety, the standard driver-assist setup is limited, and the more advanced Driving Assistant Professional Package is optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 3 Series?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to create opportunities.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,490 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.74% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,848, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $24,904 sits slightly below last year's $27,901.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you’re a future seller, the key is to buy a well-kept example and avoid overpaying, because the current pricing trend leaves less room for appreciation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2021 BMW 3 Series got a “Top Safety Pick” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with top “Good” scores in all crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance list includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. If you want more advanced protection, the Driving Assistant Package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Driving Assistant Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automated lane centering, stop-and-go functionality, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Active Side Collision Avoidance.
A key caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, and the optional Active Driving Assistant Professional system scored lower than the base system in vehicle-to-pedestrian front-crash prevention.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.74% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 adds the 330e plug-in hybrid, expanding efficiency-focused choices.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $23,598, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $24,904 average.
- It emphasizes driving enjoyment and comfort with a strong performance focus.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $28,185, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $24,904 average.
- It adds Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation with navigation across the lineup.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around pick if you want the newer hybrid option and current-market pricing. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the better value play; if you want the newer equipment set and can spend more, the 2022 is the cleaner upgrade path.
