CarGurus Analysis: 2021 BMW 2 Series
overall

Summary
With 591 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,478, 34.9% of 2021 BMW 2 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 BMW 2 Series 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
73.8% of 2021 BMW 2 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 2 Series is distinctive because it serves more than one kind of buyer. BMW’s lineup includes a coupe and convertible for driving enthusiasts, along with the 2021 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe for shoppers who simply want an affordable BMW. That makes it an unusual entry point into the brand, but also one that can be hard to pin down.
What stands out most is the car’s driving character and equipment. The 2021 BMW 2 Series is described as fun, with great handling and impressive technology. At the same time, it is hard to recommend because its seats are uncomfortable, the back seat is cramped, and it is poor value for money. That mix gives it appeal for buyers who prioritize style and driving enjoyment, while also making its compromises easy to notice.

Reviewed a 2021 BMW M240i xDrive Coupe AWD on May 28, 2025
Has almost every feature I need and want, the price I paid was a no brainer but in all honesty I was prepared to pay more. I wish it had blind spot notice and an Ariel camera view but it’s not deal breakers for me at all. I love the vehicle. I was set on an M240i but was open to years from 2018-2021 since that was my favorite body style. Ended up being able to get the newest and last year of the body style with great miles, and I’d have it no other way. Thank you Chantilly Auto!

How much does the 2021 BMW 2 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,485 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,485 |
| Year-Round High | $24,016 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,009 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.51% |
Prices have softened 10.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 595 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare options.
Is the 2021 BMW 2 Series a good car?
Yes — with a 5/5 user rating and an expert rating of 6.33/10, it lands as a car that clearly appeals to the right buyer. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.
The 2021 BMW 2 Series is best understood as an entry-level BMW that prioritizes driving enjoyment and premium-feeling equipment. Its strengths are great handling and impressive technology, and it offers multiple body styles for buyers who want either an enthusiast-focused coupe or convertible, or a more affordable BMW sedan.
The trade-offs are just as clear: uncomfortable seats and a cramped back seat make it less appealing if you need everyday comfort or rear-seat space. It also carries a poor value for money reputation, so you should shop it mainly if style, brand appeal, and driving character matter more than practicality.
The market shows 34.8% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you a decent chance to find a competitive price.
Is the 2021 BMW 2 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2021 BMW 2 Series is presented as an approachable premium car with easy-to-use technology and standard advanced safety features, which supports confidence for everyday ownership.
Its performance setup also points to a car that feels well sorted, with a turbocharged four-cylinder, xDrive availability, and driving-focused tuning that should hold up well if maintained properly. BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a car built around premium features and sporty hardware can become expensive if prior maintenance was skipped or wear items were neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 2 Series?
At 74.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or optioned heavily. Pay close attention to seat condition, rear-seat usability, tire wear, and whether the technology and driver-assistance features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The car is offered as a 228i and an M235i, with xDrive optional on the 228i and standard on the M235i. The 228i is the better-value choice if you want the entry point into the lineup, while the M235i adds more standard equipment and a more performance-oriented setup.
- Powertrain: The 228i uses a 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission, and xDrive is available for added traction. BMW also includes performance-enhancing technology such as brake-fade compensation, cornering brake control, performance control, and three driving modes.
- Safety package: The Active Driving Assistant suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning with intervention, and a speed limit information system. The optional Driving Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control and a parking-assistant feature.
- Infotainment: The system uses an 8.8-inch touchscreen with iDrive 7.0, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, navigation, connected services, and over-the-air software updates. A Premium Package adds Live Cockpit Pro with a fully digital 10.25-inch display.
- Fuel efficiency: On a test loop, it averaged 27.9 mpg, beating the EPA’s 27 mpg combined estimate.
Which 2021 BMW 2 Series trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW 2 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 228i and M235i.
Here's the short version:
- 228i: This is the best-value choice if you want the most affordable way into the lineup. It gives you the core BMW driving experience, the 228-hp turbo four-cylinder, and access to xDrive if you want extra traction.
- M235i: Choose this if you want the more performance-focused version with standard xDrive and the stronger standard equipment mix. It makes the most sense if you care more about speed and all-weather confidence than keeping the price down.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that the optional Driving Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control and parking assistance, while the Active Driving Assistant suite covers the rest of the core driver aids.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 2 Series?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 595 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,485, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW 2 Series's resale value?
The current average of $21,485 sits slightly below last year's $24,009.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, that also means resale value may be more sensitive to condition, mileage, and equipment than to badge appeal alone.
Because this model is positioned as an entry-level BMW with strong driving appeal but clear practicality compromises, well-kept examples should still attract interest from shoppers who want premium branding without paying new-car money. Clean history and desirable equipment will matter most when it is time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW 2 Series safe?
The 2021 BMW 2 Series misses earning a Top Safety Pick due to headlights that rate either Poor or Marginal, and the vehicle-to-pedestrian test also results in a less than perfect rating.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard Active Driving Assistant suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning with intervention, and a speed limit information system. The optional Driving Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control and a parking-assistant feature that steers the car into a space while you operate the pedals and transmission.
The main safety caveat is that the headlight performance keeps it from a stronger IIHS result, so you should pay attention to the exact equipment on any used example you consider.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW 2 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It blends multiple body styles with great handling and impressive technology.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $22,805, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $21,485 average.
- It offers approachable entry-level luxury with easy-to-use tech and standard safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $25,709, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,485 average.
- It brings a refreshed look, larger proportions, and more performance.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and availability, the 2021 is the primary year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2020 can still make sense, but the 2021’s softer pricing and broader market availability make it the cleaner starting point for most used-car shoppers.
