Toyota introduced the compact Corolla Hatchback for 2019 as a replacement for the Corolla iM. For 2020, it gets a new trim.

The Corolla Hatchback comes exclusively with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine good for 168 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive (FWD) comes standard. You get to pick between a standard 6-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters. Fuel-economy ratings are the same as last year: 28 mpg city, 37 highway and 31 combined with the manual transmission or 32/42/36 with the CVT.

Both the SE and XSE trims return to the Corolla Hatchback, while a new Nightshade trim slides between them. The base SE’s content includes 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, LED exterior lights, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, satellite radio, an 8-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and a 4.2-inch instrument cluster display. For 2020, the standard system now supports Android Auto. The Nightshade trim includes all of the SE’s content, plus black-painted alloy wheels, black exterior accents, and a black interior with either black, white, or silver exterior paint. Finally, the XSE gets 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, a 7-inch instrument cluster display, LED fog lights, and a premium audio system. The only standalone option is a black-painted roof.

Every Corolla Hatchback boasts Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0). The suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and traffic-sign recognition. The Corolla Hatchback received a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
