Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Corolla stands out by adding style and a little excitement to a nameplate long associated with affordability, reliability, efficiency, and practicality. It remains a compact sedan aimed at buyers who want a sensible daily driver, but the redesign gives it a more appealing personality than the Corolla has traditionally been known for. That broader appeal is part of what makes this version distinctive: it still promises the straightforward ownership experience shoppers expect, while feeling less purely utilitarian than before.
It also brings several concrete strengths that help it compete in the compact-car class. A manual transmission is available, premium interior materials are part of the package, and standard advanced safety features add peace of mind. Those qualities make the 2020 Corolla attractive to buyers who want value without giving up a more polished cabin or important safety equipment. The main drawback noted here is seat comfort, which may matter to drivers who spend a lot of time behind the wheel.

I bought a 2020 Toyota Corolla LE and owned it for about a year and a half. It rides smooth, has great safety features, and is amazing with gas mileage. I was averaging a combined 36.7mpg everywhere I went. I’ve never owned a vehicle so new, so getting used to the fancy new cruise control that matches the speed of the vehicle in front of you took some getting used to. The lane assist was a really cool feature! However, I live in the desert of New Mexico, so if the sun hits the road just right, it’ll bounce off the painted stripes and make it unrecognizable to the sensors. Other than that, it’s a great feature! For a compact car, it has enough space for a single person or a family of two or three. Spacious cargo bay! The leg room is a little tight in the back, especially if the driver or passenger scoots back a little. That being said, I was hoping the seats would be a little more comfy being a 2020 model. Kinda stiff and not super comfortable for 1hr+ rides. Not bad, but could be better. All in all, this is a great car with great safety features that I would recommend to anyone, even a new driver thanks to the warning systems aboard! Love it.

It is a manual transmission. I was searching for the S PLUS model but since they were discontinued, I saw that this model was similar (smart key/push button starter) That is a plus, you will never lock your car with the keys inside. Mainly (the manual Transmission) I have been driving manual transmission for over 30 years, I wish they would never stop making them. I am very impressed with Corollas because of there reliability. The prevoius 3 vehicles all have been Corollas Manual Transmission, the last one was a 2015 S PLUS model I purchased in February 2018 with 54K miles on it. It currently has 391K and I never had a break down or been stranded, not even the clutch, all Ive done was change the oil every 5K, tires, battery, breaks, shocks and struts when needed. Corolla is an excellent reliable vehicle.

How much does the 2020 Toyota Corolla cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,630 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,780 |
| Year-Round High | $16,732 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,503 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.77% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 2,562 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare on price, mileage, and condition.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Corolla earns 4.7/5 from owners and 7/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value for the price. The Corolla is aimed at you if you want a sensible daily driver, but this redesign adds a more appealing personality than the nameplate has traditionally had.
The main trade-offs are seat comfort, sound insulation, and tight back legroom. Even so, the Corolla still fits buyers who want a straightforward ownership experience with a more polished cabin and a little more character than before.
Only 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market has some value opportunities but rewards quick comparison shopping.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as reliable and praise its dependable performance, while the expert review calls it dependable as a sunrise and thrifty with fuel. That combination points to a car you can count on for everyday use without much fuss.
Toyota’s ownership experience is also framed as straightforward and cost-effective, which supports the Corolla’s reputation for low-stress long-term use. For used buyers, the main risk is less about mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example with the right maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
At 58.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage car or one with visible wear. Focus on seat condition, cabin noise, and overall interior quality, since comfort is one of the Corolla’s weaker points.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L trim is the base version, while LE and XLE add an 8-inch display and a USB charging port; SE and XSE bring a more powerful engine, 18-inch wheels, and a sportier feel. The base setup is the most stripped-down, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want a more polished cabin.
- Powertrain: L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with 139 horsepower, while SE and XSE upgrade to a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 169 horsepower. The SE also offers a 6-speed manual, and the more powerful setup is the better fit if you want more responsiveness.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE and optional on LE and SE, so lower trims leave you with fewer safety conveniences.
- Infotainment: The Corolla uses Entune 3.0 with a 7-inch screen on standard versions and an 8-inch display on LE and higher. Apple CarPlay is included, Android Auto is not, and wireless device charging is available on XSE and XLE.
- Fuel efficiency: The test car returned 31 mpg city and 38 mpg highway, and the review notes that you may do better in normal driving.
Which 2020 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Corolla lineup. You give up some convenience and visual polish, so it’s best if price matters more than features.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 8-inch display and a USB charging port while staying close to the core Corolla formula. If you want a balanced mix of equipment and value, this is the one to focus on.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and available convenience features, including wireless device charging. It suits you if comfort and a richer feature set matter more than keeping the price down.
- SE: This is the trim to get if you want the sportier personality, the 2.0-liter engine, and the available 6-speed manual. It’s the right pick if you want the Corolla to feel more engaging without moving all the way to the top of the range.
- XSE: This is the most fully featured and most polished version, with the stronger engine, premium touches, and available upgrades like JBL audio and wireless charging. It’s the best choice if you want the most complete Corolla experience.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE, and optional on LE and SE.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can find value if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,562 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,780, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $16,630 sits slightly above last year's $16,503.
That small increase suggests the Corolla has held its value fairly well, which is a good sign if you plan to sell later. Stable pricing also points to steady demand rather than a market that is swinging sharply up or down.
Because the Corolla is viewed as reliable, efficient, and cost-effective, it tends to appeal to a broad pool of used-car shoppers. That helps support resale strength, especially when the car is clean, well maintained, and priced near market average.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla safe?
The 2020 Toyota Corolla earns a five-star rating for frontal-impact protection from NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Lane Tracing Assist works with adaptive cruise control to help keep you centered in your lane.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE and optional on LE and SE, so lower trims leave you with fewer safety conveniences. The review also notes that the lane-departure warning uses an aural alert that can be irritating.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The redesigned 2020 Corolla adds style and a bit of excitement to the nameplate.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,037, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,630 average.
- It adds a more engaging SE and XSE personality, plus a limited Apex Edition.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because pricing is stable and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly newer model with a sportier edge, the 2021 is worth a look.
