CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 2,314 currently listed for sale and an average price of $35,634.00, 32.0% of 2020 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota 4Runner 4.85 / 5 stars.
70.4% of 2020 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is known for its ruggedness, reliability, and off-road capability, making it a popular choice for those who prioritize durability.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is a standout in the SUV market due to its robust off-road capabilities and reliable performance. Built on a truck chassis, it features a powerful 4.0-liter V6 engine that delivers 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, making it well-suited for tackling challenging terrains. The 4Runner's body-on-frame construction enhances its durability, allowing it to withstand the rigors of off-road driving. While it may not offer the most modern interior features compared to competitors, it compensates with a rugged design and a high seating position that provides excellent visibility. The addition of Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) for 2020 enhances its safety profile, making it a more appealing option for families. However, potential buyers should be aware of its less-than-ideal fuel economy and the relatively high price point, which may not offer the best value for those who do not require its off-road capabilities.

Love the color and the ability to do anything in this bad boy. Drives off road super smooth and easy, drives on paced road as smooth as the SR5. This is the perfect vehicle.

The perfect dinosaur for me! I chose this make and model specifically for its older tech and build quality. Is it fast, no. Does it sip gas, nope. Does it feel solid, yes. This is my second one. The first is still running great at 20 years old. My only gripe is the type of OEM step bars. Easy to get in, but not the best for getting out of the vehicle. They will be swapped. Problem solved. This is a popular platform but it isn't the right vehicle for everyone. If you are considering a 4Runner, watch the Care Care Nut's review of the 5th gen 4Runners FIRST. Know what you are buying. I have had a Lexus and 2 different 4 Runners. These are the best vehicles I have ever owned and that’s comparing them to Volvo, Dodge, Jeep, and BMW. The only thing I have a problem with is gas mileage but that’s what you get when you have 4 wheel drive. It would be nice if it had the push button lift for the tail gate but no big deal. They are awesome vehicles. I am on my 4th Toyota/Lexus brand.

This 2020 4 Runner is a great choice. I have a very active lifestyle. I surf, snowboard, cycle and take my two dogs almost everywhere I go. So this vehicle is perfect for what I need. The SR5 Premium model has just enough nice features that it feels like your driving a luxury car minus the high price tag. If you are looking for a true goat of a truck I recommend this vehicle.

Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating.
The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and they also highlight its comfort, safety features, and off-road capability. The main trade-offs are its poor value for money, poor fuel economy, and interior materials that feel cheap.
For your use case, that makes sense if you want a durable SUV with real trail ability rather than a polished daily commuter. The market still shows 32.2% of listings as good or great deals, so there are still attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as rugged, reliable, dependable, and built for durability, with value retention also coming through strongly in their feedback. The engine’s longevity is also called out as a strength, and the truck-based construction supports that tough, long-term character.
The 4Runner’s dependability is reinforced by its straightforward powertrain and its reputation for handling hard use without drama. Toyota also includes modern driver-assistance features that help reduce day-to-day stress, which can support confidence over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age and rugged use can hide wear, so condition matters more than mileage alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen off-road use. Pay close attention to body condition, suspension wear, tire wear, and signs of hard use underneath the vehicle. Because this model is often bought for capability, you want to confirm that the example you’re considering has been maintained as carefully as it has been driven.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come standard with cloth, while SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium add SofTex; the Limited uses leather upholstery. All trims get an 8-inch touchscreen, but the Limited and TRD Pro stand out visually with different grille treatments, and the Venture adds 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic. Output is 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, and the setup is tuned more for durability and off-road use than smoothness or efficiency. EPA estimates are 16 mpg city, 19 highway, 17 combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 4Runner also comes with eight standard airbags. The lane-departure alert is reactive rather than a more active lane-keeping system.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also supports Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, and subscription services, while higher trims add features like a JBL stereo and navigation. Toyota’s own interface is usable, but it trails the best systems in usability.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined, and real-world testing returned 17.7 mpg over more than 400 miles. The 4Runner does not get better fuel economy with 2WD.
Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: SR5 gives you the core 4Runner experience, but it starts with cloth upholstery and lacks the more upscale materials found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: SR5 Premium is the best value if you want a more comfortable cabin, since it adds SofTex while keeping the 4Runner’s core capability intact.
- Premium/top trim: Limited is the most comfort-focused choice, with leather upholstery and a more upscale presentation for shoppers who want the 4Runner’s ruggedness with extra refinement.
- Off-road trim: TRD Pro is the most serious trail option, but it comes with a steep price and is best if you truly need maximum off-road hardware.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, so you get the same core driver-assistance suite across the range.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
The market looks moderate, with enough inventory to shop selectively rather than urgently.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,305 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.13% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,535.88, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $35,634 sits slightly below last year's $36,783.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, trim desirability, and whether the vehicle has a clean history. Because this model has strong enthusiast appeal and a reputation for durability, well-kept examples should continue to draw interest.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA and Good ratings from IIHS in all crash tests except the small overlap front: driver-side test, where it scored Marginal.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 4Runner also comes with eight standard airbags.
The main caveat is the IIHS small overlap front: driver-side result, which is weaker than the rest of its crash-test performance. That makes a careful inspection and a realistic understanding of the vehicle’s older design especially important.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.13% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota Safety Sense P and the updated 8-inch infotainment system make this year more modern than earlier versions.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $32,245, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $35,634 average.
- It keeps the same rugged, off-road-focused character with proven reliability.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,481, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $35,634 average.
- It adds more convenience tech and keeps the same durable, go-anywhere appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, modern safety tech, and the classic 4Runner formula, the 2020 is the sweet spot. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better value path. If you want a newer example and are willing to pay more, the 2021 is the natural upgrade.
