overall

Summary
With 187 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,608, 42.2% of 2020 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru Outback 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Outback stands out by blending wagon-like character with crossover practicality, and Subaru’s sixth-generation update gives it a more modern feel without losing that familiar identity. It brings a giant new tablet interface, fresh safety tech, and two new engines, while still leaning into the utility, performance, and looks that have made the Outback Subaru’s top-selling model. Standard all-wheel drive is a major advantage, and the Outback’s spacious cabin adds to its appeal for buyers who want everyday usefulness with a distinctive shape.
There are tradeoffs, though. The standard engine is described as underwhelming, and the touchscreen response is sluggish, which can take some shine off the otherwise well-rounded package. Even so, the 2020 Subaru Outback remains appealing for shoppers who value space, value for money, and a comfortable, safety-focused driving experience in a vehicle that still feels a little different from the typical crossover.

More money yields a better, quieter, smoother ride and features. I think the Suburu Outback has many such benefits without having to spend an extraordinary amount of money for them. It has great safety features, extras such as 3 position headrests, gets good mileage, and is well equipped with convenience items. Its a good value for what it offers and has a particularly good reputation for quality and reliability.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,527 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,527 |
| Year-Round High | $21,950 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,953 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.49% |
Prices have softened 6.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,803 listings available, which suggests solid inventory availability for shoppers comparing prices and trims.
Is the 2020 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru Outback earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, ample interior space, and safety-focused feel, and many also like the smooth ride and strong overall practicality. The Outback’s wagon-like shape and everyday usefulness fit well if you want a vehicle that feels distinctive without giving up crossover convenience.
The main trade-offs are the sluggish touchscreen response and the underwhelming base engine. Even so, the Outback makes the most sense if you value space, value for money, and a comfortable, safety-minded driving experience.
The market also looks reasonably favorable, with 33.6% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2020 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with many owners describing it as a vehicle they feel good about keeping for the long term. The expert review also emphasizes the Outback’s all-time symmetrical all-wheel drive, which helps deliver consistent power delivery and less disruption when conditions change.
The cost-effectiveness review also notes that Subaru’s pricing structure gives you a wide range of choices, which can help you match the vehicle to your budget and needs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific example you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear from hard use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Outback?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not guaranteed. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the touchscreen, driver-assistance systems, and overall cabin condition, since those are the areas most likely to affect day-to-day satisfaction. It also makes sense to compare trims closely, because equipment levels change meaningfully as you move up the lineup.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i gets LED headlights, keyless entry, automatic climate control, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, but it feels a little spartan compared with higher trims. The Premium adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat, while the Limited adds leather upholstery, an upgraded stereo, reverse auto braking, and standard blind-spot monitoring and a power liftgate. The Touring adds upgraded leather, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof, while the Onyx Edition XT adds the more powerful engine plus off-road-oriented hardware and features.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter engine makes 182 horsepower and is paired with a CVT, while XT trims use a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with 260 hp and 277 pound-feet of torque. The base engine is efficient enough for daily use, and the turbo is the better fit if you want stronger passing, towing, or mountain driving.
- Safety package: Subaru’s standard safety suite includes wiper-linked automatic headlights, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep alert and assist. Blind-spot monitoring is not standard on the Premium and becomes standard on the Limited.
- Infotainment: Most trims get an 11.6-inch touchscreen, while the base trim uses dual 7-inch screens. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are included, but the system’s lag and slower response are worth checking carefully during a test drive.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru Outback is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5i, Premium, Limited, Touring, Touring XT, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the value-focused starting point, with LED headlights, keyless entry, automatic climate control, and standard safety tech. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the simpler dual-screen setup.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the large 11.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. It’s the trim that most clearly upgrades the daily experience without jumping too far in price.
- Limited: This is the better pick if you want more comfort and convenience, including leather upholstery, an upgraded stereo, reverse auto braking, and standard blind-spot monitoring plus a power liftgate. It suits you if you want a more upscale feel and more standard equipment.
- Touring: This is the comfort-first choice, with upgraded leather, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof. It’s the trim to consider if you want the most relaxed, near-luxury version of the standard engine setup.
- Onyx Edition XT: This is the most distinctive choice, pairing the turbo engine with heated rear seats, a front-view camera, hill-descent control, and a more aggressive version of Subaru’s X-Mode. It’s the one to buy if you want the most off-road-capable Outback.
- Limited XT: This trim combines the Limited’s upscale equipment with the turbo engine, making it a strong pick if you want more power without giving up comfort features.
- Touring XT: This is the top-end comfort-and-power choice, adding the turbo engine to the Touring’s upgraded cabin equipment. It suits you if you want the most premium version of the lineup.
The safety package is strong even on the base trim, but blind-spot monitoring is not standard until you move up to the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Outback?
The market looks selective but workable if you’re ready to move on a good example.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,803 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,527, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $20,527 sits slightly below last year's $21,953.
That softer pricing suggests the Outback is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly, which can make it easier for future buyers to find value. If you’re planning to resell later, the current trend implies you may not see rapid appreciation, but the model’s broad appeal should help support demand.
The Outback’s strong mix of practicality, safety, and owner satisfaction should continue to help it hold attention in the used market. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2020 Subaru Outback earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep alert and assist, and wiper-linked automatic headlights. The review also notes that the standard AWD system adds confidence in poor conditions.
A key caveat is that the EyeSight system can be affected by snow, mud, fog, or direct sunlight, and DriverFocus is described as frustrating in practice. Blind-spot monitoring is also not standard on the Premium trim, so you’ll want to check equipment carefully if that feature matters to you.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Expert review highlights its standard all-wheel drive, spacious cabin, and strong value.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $21,757, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,527 average.
- It adds a stronger emphasis on reliability and high resale.
The bottom line: If you want the better price today, the 2020 is the smarter path. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model-year alternative, the 2021 is worth a look for buyers who prioritize long-term confidence and resale appeal.
