CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 111 currently listed for sale near Richmond, VA and an average price of $8,646.00, 25.2% of 2015 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Subaru Outback 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
88.3% of 2015 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Outback stands out by combining the utility buyers expect from a crossover SUV with a level of capability that can be hard to match in a wide range of driving situations. It was redesigned for 2015, and that update made it bigger and better than before while still keeping the package practical rather than cumbersome.
One of its defining traits is standard all-wheel drive, which gives it broad appeal for drivers who want extra confidence without giving up fuel economy. That balance is a major part of the Outback’s charm: it offers more than just everyday usefulness, yet it does so in a way that does not penalize buyers at the pump. Owners also tend to appreciate its solid ride, luxurious feel, impressive safety features, and ample cargo space. A possible drawback is that some shoppers may miss built-in navigation, but for many buyers the Outback’s mix of capability, comfort, and efficiency is the bigger story.

Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 3.6R Limited on Jul 4, 2025
My mother recently purchased a brand new Outback in 2023 and from the drives I’ve taken in it, all of the safety features and the body style, center of gravity and comfort led me to look for used Outbacks for my next purchase. I was not disappointed in the 2015 and I will have a hard time wanting to sit in any other car without a 6-cylinder engine. The Limited trim is perfectly comfortable: the same EyeSight features and safety focuses accomplish the same as a brand new year model but with a touch of “retro” flair in the (arguably dated but, I don’t mind) screen, the accent lighting in the cab and less is more approach of the interiors.

The Subaru Outback 3.6R is the absolute best iteration of the Outback. Test driven model years 2013, 2015 & 2019 and the Outback just gets better and better. If you can find a 3.6R Limited trim level, be quick to snatch it up before I do -- LOL! I truly believe this wagon is worth every penny.

Yes — the 4.86/5 user rating and 8.17/10 expert rating both point to a model year that lands well with shoppers and testers alike.
The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the solid ride, luxurious feel, impressive safety features, ample cargo space, and fuel efficiency. That lines up well with the Outback’s practical, crossover-like use case, especially if you want extra confidence from standard all-wheel drive without giving up everyday usability.
With 28.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a reliable, dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with buyers appreciating a vehicle they can count on over the long term. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the Outback as a practical, capable vehicle with a safety-first design and a confident, stout ride.
The cost-effectiveness review also notes that Subaru’s ownership appeal is supported by strong value retention, and that can matter if you plan to keep the vehicle for years.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior wear, maintenance history, and overall condition are clean before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
At 60.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment level matches what you expect from the trim. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is often worth paying a little more for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i includes a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchscreen interface for the climate control and audio systems, and a roof rack with crossbars, while the 2.5i Premium adds 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, fog lamps, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The 2.5i Limited adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, and lane-change assist, while the 3.6R Limited adds a 6-cylinder engine and Xenon headlamps. The best-value trim is often the Premium if you want a meaningful comfort upgrade without jumping all the way to the top.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder makes 175 hp and uses a CVT, while the available 3.6-liter 6-cylinder brings more power for buyers who want stronger acceleration. The 2.5-liter setup is described as adequate but not especially quick, and the 3.6R is the more powerful, less efficient choice.
- Safety package: EyeSight is available on Premium and Limited trims and uses two windshield-mounted cameras to monitor the road ahead, warn you about danger, and brake the vehicle if needed. The Rear Vehicle Detection System is optional on Premium models and standard on Limited models, and it includes blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist.
- Infotainment: Starlink includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, hands-free calling, music streaming, and app access. The available navigation system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with swipe and pinch controls, and the interface is described as simple and crisp.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine is paired with an EPA rating of 28 mpg in combined driving, though real-world results can vary.
Which 2015 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the entry point, but it still gives you useful everyday equipment like a rear-view camera, Bluetooth, a touchscreen interface for climate and audio, and a roof rack with crossbars. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Outback formula.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the trim that adds the most obvious comfort upgrades, including heated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, fog lamps, alloy wheels, and dual-zone automatic climate control. If you want the best balance of price and features, this is the trim to target.
- 2.5i Limited: This is the richer choice, adding a power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, and lane-change assist. It suits you if you want more convenience and safety tech.
- 3.6R Limited: This is the choice for stronger acceleration, thanks to the 6-cylinder engine, and it also gets Xenon headlamps. Pick this if power matters more to you than efficiency.
EyeSight is available on Premium and Limited trims, and the Rear Vehicle Detection System is optional on Premium but standard on Limited.

The current average of $10,847 sits slightly below last year's $11,837.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, that also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle is documented and maintained. Clean examples should still hold appeal because the model’s practical reputation remains a selling point.

Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2015 redesign made the Outback bigger, better, and more mainstream while preserving standard all-wheel drive and strong fuel economy.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,880, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $10,847 average.
- It emphasizes spaciousness, comfort, fuel efficiency, and family-friendly versatility.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2015 is the stronger buy because prices have softened and the model year still delivers the core Outback strengths. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer alternative, the 2016 is the cleaner next-step choice for buyers who prioritize comfort and practicality over upfront savings.
