CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru Ascent
overall

Summary
With 1,792 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,121, 37.6% of 2020 Subaru Ascents for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru Ascent 4.88 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
79.0% of 2020 Ascent models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Ascent is positioned as a family-size SUV that aims to keep current Subaru owners in the fold while also attracting new buyers who need more room. It stands out for offering extra space for people, pets, and cargo, and it pairs that practicality with thoughtful features that make it feel well considered for everyday family use. Standard all-wheel drive is a major advantage, and the Ascent also comes with standard advanced safety features, which adds to its appeal for shoppers who prioritize confidence and peace of mind.
At the same time, the 2020 Ascent is not trying to win over buyers with excitement. Its performance is described as fairly pedestrian, and poor fuel economy is another drawback. Even so, it remains a comfortable, safety-focused SUV with a broad family-friendly mission, which makes it especially appealing to buyers who value utility, standard traction, and a calm driving experience over speed or efficiency.

Roomy and just as luxurious as comparable top of the line mid-size SUVs (like Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander). Safety rating is unbeatable. Smooth drive and great breaking.

Wonderful, beautiful car! Blown away about how well thought out the design of the car was. Very functional and pleasing to the eye ! Kids love it too.

Reviewed a 2020 Subaru Ascent on Jan 15, 2022
I needed a vehicle with a third row option because my family is expanding. I test drove a Toyota Highlander and just felt this suited me better. The third row in the Highlander was uncomfortable and felt like an afterthought. The third row in the Ascent actually feels like a real third row - there is more room and the seats sit back a little at an incline, rather than being uncomfortably upright and with no leg room. I also found it easier to get into the back row in the Ascent, compared to the Highlander. We considered the Toyota Sienna hybrid, but I didnt really want a mini van and I didnt want something ridiculously huge. The Ascent is big, but reasonably so and very comfortable to drive. I think it will be great for long family trips and it feels very safe. Im only 53 and always feel uncomfortable and awkward driving a big beast of an SUV. But the drivers seat and steering wheel all seem to fit me very well. The Ascent also has a really great turn radius, so its more maneuverable than it appears. Lots of great family-friendly features and I also like that it has a good amount of ground clearance. It sits high off the ground but even as Im six months pregnant its still easy enough for me to get in and out of. I only wish they made a hybrid version for better fuel economy and more eco-friendly. However, the mpg is decent, given the size (comparable or even better than my old Honda CRV)

How much does the 2020 Subaru Ascent cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,106 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,079 |
| Year-Round High | $22,612 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,610 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.07% |
Prices have softened 11.07% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,796 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru Ascent earns a 4.88/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its roominess, safety features, and family-friendly design, and many also like the comfortable interior and balanced driving feel. The Ascent’s use case is straightforward: it is built for you if you want a three-row SUV with extra space for people, pets, and cargo, plus standard all-wheel drive and a calm, practical personality. The main trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and poor fuel economy. Even so, 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, family-friendly, and easy to count on over time, with repeated praise for its comfort and safety-minded character. The expert evaluation also describes it as a safe family vehicle that should prove a faithful friend when weather turns difficult. Subaru’s three-year free Safety Plus connected services add another ownership perk, and the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about living with the Ascent’s rough edges if you expect a polished, low-friction ownership experience.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Ascent?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not universal. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the transmission behavior, interior wear, and any signs of neglected maintenance, since condition can vary widely from one family SUV to another. Focus on how the vehicle feels in everyday use, especially if you plan to keep it for long trips, school runs, or winter driving.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim starts with smaller 18-inch wheels and lacks dark-tinted privacy glass, while Premium adds nicer detailing, a superior infotainment system, and more features. Limited brings leather seats, and Touring adds premium leather, a panoramic sunroof, special wood trim, and other luxury-themed enhancements. CarGurus recommends the Premium with the Convenience and Sporty option packages as the best-value path.
- Powertrain: Every Ascent uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a CVT and all-wheel drive. It makes 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, delivers good acceleration for its size, and stays strong at elevation.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Premium adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited adds LED steering-responsive headlights with automatic high-beam operation and reverse automatic braking.
- Infotainment: All models include Starlink with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, integrated apps, and a CD player. Premium adds an 8-inch touchscreen, text messaging, a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, and Starlink Safety and Security connected services, while Touring adds a high-resolution screen and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test loop returned 18.9 mpg, and the official EPA estimate is 22 mpg in combined driving for versions with 20-inch wheels.
Which 2020 Subaru Ascent trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru Ascent is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Premium, Limited, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, but it misses some of the nicer visual and convenience touches you get higher up. It works if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable keeping equipment simple.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim. It adds the larger 8-inch touchscreen, more features, and access to the blind-spot monitoring system, making it the smartest balance of price and equipment.
- Limited: This trim is for you if you want a more upscale feel, with leather seats and added safety equipment such as LED steering-responsive headlights and reverse automatic braking.
- Touring: This is the most luxurious version, with premium leather, a panoramic sunroof, special wood trim, and a high-resolution screen with navigation.
Premium trim adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited includes LED steering-responsive headlights with automatic high-beam operation and reverse automatic braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Ascent?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,796 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.07% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 79.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,079, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru Ascent's resale value?
The current average of $20,106 sits slightly below last year's $22,610.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also temper future upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is that the Ascent’s value is being supported by steady demand rather than rapid appreciation. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintain the vehicle well, you should be in a better position when it’s time to trade or sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent safe?
The 2020 Subaru Ascent earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is Subaru’s camera-based driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Premium trim adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited adds LED steering-responsive headlights with automatic high-beam operation and reverse automatic braking. Subaru also includes a rear-seat reminder system for 2020, and Starlink Safety Plus connected services add automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and roadside assistance. Security Plus adds curfew, speed, and boundary alerts, plus remote engine start with climate control operation.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines standard all-wheel drive, strong safety, and a family-focused cabin with a broad range of trims.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $17,545, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,106 average.
- It is a spacious, family-focused three-row SUV with standard all-wheel drive.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,170, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,106 average.
- It adds a few key safety features as newly standard equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and inventory, the 2020 is the primary pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the value alternative, while the 2021 makes sense if you want to spend more for a slightly newer model with added standard safety equipment.
