Is the 2020 Nissan Frontier a good car?

Generally — the 2020 Nissan Frontier earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 5/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, handling, and power, and they also appreciate the straightforward, no-frills design. The overview points to a truck that still appeals if you want simplicity and traditional truck character, while the user summary also reflects satisfaction with its dependable, workmanlike personality. On the downside, the expert review calls out outdated technology and poor value for money, and the Frontier’s age is obvious in the areas many buyers expect to be more modern.

The market shows 34.0% good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Nissan Frontier reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user summary points to a truck that owners feel good about over time, with praise centered on its comfortable ride, handling, and power. The expert review also describes the Frontier as a strong, straightforward truck with a brand-new engine and transmission that give it a more modern powertrain than its age suggests. Nissan’s own testing notes that the new drivetrain is remarkably smooth and refined, with quick, clean shifts and robust low-end response.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the truck’s age shows up in other areas, so you should expect a vehicle that can feel durable but may still need closer scrutiny for wear and outdated equipment.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Nissan Frontier?

At 65% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a truck with higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the truck’s equipment and trim level match the listing. Because this model’s safety and technology are dated, it’s especially important to confirm that everything present is functioning properly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Frontier is offered in King Cab and Crew Cab body styles, with S, SV, and PRO-4X trims. Base S versions are the most stripped-down, while PRO-4X adds a tube-style roof rack, unique 16-inch alloy wheels, knobby white-lettered tires, a standard spray-in bedliner, and bedside graphics.
• Powertrain: The truck uses a 3.8-liter V6 with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The engine develops 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque, and the drivetrain is described as smooth, refined, and strong in acceleration.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera, antilock brakes, traction control, and stability control. Advanced driver-assistance features are not standard.
• Infotainment: The Frontier uses a 5.8-inch touchscreen with NissanConnect Apps, satellite radio, navigation, voice recognition, and a 10-speaker Rockford Fosgate premium sound system. It does not have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert review says fuel-economy ratings increase by 1 mpg in combined driving for RWD models and 2 mpg for 4WD models, and it notes an observed 19.3 mpg on the test loop.

Which 2020 Nissan Frontier trim should I buy?

The 2020 Nissan Frontier is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, PRO-4X.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value-focused choice if you want the Frontier’s basic truck character at the lowest entry point. It makes the most sense if you care more about straightforward utility than extra equipment.
• SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more flexibility, including available packages such as the Value Truck Package, Midnight Edition Package, Special Edition Package, and Utility Package. If you want a better-equipped Frontier without jumping all the way to the off-road-oriented model, this is the trim to target.
• PRO-4X: This is the trim to choose if you want the most distinctive look and the strongest off-road hardware. It adds the tube-style roof rack, unique wheels, knobby tires, spray-in bedliner, bedside graphics, and standard Bilstein off-road shocks.

The safety content makes clear that advanced driver-assistance technology is limited across the lineup, so don’t expect a trim-level leap in modern safety features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Nissan Frontier?

The market looks moderate for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.

• Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 844 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.59% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $20,544, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Nissan Frontier's resale value?

The current average of $20,544 sits slightly below last year's $22,231.

That decline suggests the Frontier has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help if you buy used and later resell. If prices stay near this level, future sellers may benefit from a relatively stable entry point rather than a sharply falling market. The truck’s straightforward appeal and loyal owner base can also help support demand among shoppers who want a simple midsize pickup.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Nissan Frontier safe?

The 2020 Nissan Frontier earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with three-star ratings for the driver in frontal impact, two-star ratings for the front passenger in frontal impact, and a three-star rollover resistance rating for RWD models. It also earns a Marginal rating in the IIHS small overlap frontal-impact test and a Poor rating for headlights.

It earns a 1/10 safety score from our experts.

The Frontier’s standard driver-assistance and safety equipment is limited to a reversing camera, antilock brakes, traction control, and stability control. Advanced safety features are not standard, and the expert review treats that as one of the truck’s biggest weaknesses.

Should I buy a 2020 Nissan Frontier or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.59% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The year’s standout update is the brand-new 3.8-liter V6 and nine-speed automatic, which give the truck a much stronger powertrain than earlier versions.

The bottom line: The 2020 Frontier makes sense if you want the updated powertrain and can live with its dated safety and technology. If you’re price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years for a lower entry cost, but the 2020 is the version that brings the most important mechanical upgrade to the table.
