The trade-offs are clear: the expert review calls out frustrating safety tech, unintuitive technology, and sluggish performance. That means you’re getting a luxury SUV with broad appeal, but you should expect some usability compromises if you value polished controls and quick acceleration.

With 38.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market flexibility to shop carefully.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE reliable?

The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with many drivers appreciating its smooth ride, spacious cabin, and modern technology over the long haul. The expert review also describes the GLE as quiet and comfortable, which supports the sense that it’s built for steady, low-stress ownership.

The performance write-up adds that the engine is smooth and powerful once you’re moving, which reinforces the idea that the drivetrain is designed for relaxed, predictable use. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s complex tech and options have aged well.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the electronics, driver-assistance behavior, and any optional comfort or tech equipment, since this model leans heavily on features that can affect day-to-day satisfaction. Focus on whether the cabin, controls, and safety systems work the way you expect before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GLE 350 starts with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, and the base setup can be expanded with 4Matic all-wheel drive and a long list of options. The cabin can be upgraded with items like leather upholstery, multi-contour front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, power rear-window blinds, 4-zone climate control, soft-close doors, and premium trim pieces, so base-trim examples may feel much less lavish than heavily optioned ones.
• Powertrain: The GLE 350 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 255 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It’s smooth and strong once rolling, but it can feel sluggish from a stop and show noticeable turbo lag. The AWD version is rated at 19 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package Plus adds the autonomous safety features and delivers strong Level 2 capability. The standard feature list includes adaptive cruise, auto braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, Attention Assist, and Seat Kinetics, while the surround-view camera system is separate.
• Infotainment: The cabin uses two giant 12.3-inch screens and the MBUX infotainment system. It also offers a head-up display, augmented-reality navigation, wireless charging, and gesture control, though the system can feel deep and daunting at first.
• Fuel efficiency: The AWD GLE 350 returns 19 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined.

Which 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE is offered in 1 trim level: GLE 350.

Here's the short version:

The GLE 350 is the trim to focus on if you want the core redesign, the roomy cabin, and the latest MBUX tech without chasing higher-priced versions. It gives you the new interior layout, strong standard luxury feel, and the broadest value proposition in the lineup, especially if you can find one with the right options already installed. If you want the best balance of price and equipment, this is the one to target.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that the Driver Assistance Package Plus adds the autonomous safety features, while the surround-view camera system is separate.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 38.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,829 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.46% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 81.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $27,313, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE's resale value?

The current average of $27,313 sits slightly below last year's $31,200.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you’ll want to buy carefully and avoid overpaying for options that won’t fully come back at trade-in time.

The good news is that the GLE’s broad appeal, luxury image, and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should remain easier to move than stripped or poorly maintained ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.57/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE safe?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE has no current crash-test data from NHTSA or IIHS.

It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety content highlights a broad suite of driver-assistance features, including Attention Assist, adaptive cruise, auto braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. It also notes that the Driver Assistance Package Plus adds the autonomous safety features, but the system can be frustrating at speed because it may wander in the lane, fight driver input, and get confused by shadows or merging lines.

That caveat matters if you plan to rely on the assistance tech often. You should treat the system as a helpful layer of support, not something you can assume will behave perfectly in every situation.

Should I buy a 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 38.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.46% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.57/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 model brings the full redesign, roomier cabin, and Mercedes’ newest MBUX technology.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $38,426, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,313 average.
• It adds GLE Coupe models for a more distinctive body style.

The 2020 is the better value if you want the redesigned GLE experience at a much lower market price. If you’re willing to spend more for a broader lineup and a more distinctive look, the 2021 is the alternative to compare. For most price-sensitive buyers, the 2020 is the smarter starting point.
