Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA a good car?

Generally — the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

The CLA’s appeal is strongest if you want a small luxury car that feels more upscale than budget-minded. It was redesigned for 2020, and the result is a four-door coupe with coupe-like styling that still makes sense for commuters and first-time luxury buyers who want a comfortable place to sit and an occasional back seat for guests or kids.

The trade-offs are real: the headrests can’t be adjusted, the lane-keep assist is overly aggressive, and the back seat is cramped. Even so, the overall package leans toward style, comfort, and premium presentation rather than pure practicality.

30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The CLA is described as a more sophisticated vehicle than the one it replaced, and its turbocharged 4-cylinder powertrain is presented as strong for the size of the car. The transmission is tuned to keep the engine in its useful power range, and the car is praised for refined steering and precise cornering without sacrificing ride quality.

Mercedes also gives you a modern voice-control system and a cabin built around the latest infotainment setup, which can help daily use feel less dated over time. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the car’s premium features and options can make upkeep and repair costs more sensitive to how well the previous owner maintained it.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA?

At 64.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been optioned heavily or shows signs of prior bodywork. Focus on overall condition, because the CLA’s appeal depends a lot on how well the cabin, electronics, and driver-assistance features have held up.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The CLA 250 includes LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, a panoramic moonroof, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, sport bucket seats, and a 7-inch touchscreen with a center-console trackpad. Higher versions add all-wheel drive or performance-oriented hardware, while the test car also showed how options can significantly upgrade the cabin with a larger screen, heated front seats, ambient lighting, a premium audio system, and wireless charging.
• Powertrain: The CLA 250 uses a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The front-wheel-drive version is rated at 25 mpg city, 35 highway, 28 combined, while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 23 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined.
• Safety package: A driver-assistance package includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic high beams, and a driver-drowsiness monitor. The lane-keeping assist can be abrupt, so you should test it carefully during a drive.
• Infotainment: The CLA uses MBUX with a touchscreen and trackpad controller, plus voice control that responds to “Hey, Mercedes.” The cabin can also be equipped with a larger 10.25-inch infotainment screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive version is rated at 25 mpg city, 35 highway, 28 combined, while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 23 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined.

Which 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA is offered in 4 trim levels: CLA 250, CLA 250 4Matic, AMG CLA 35 4Matic, AMG CLA 45 4Matic.

Here's the short version:

• CLA 250: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the CLA’s core appeal: stylish design, a premium-feeling cabin, a panoramic moonroof, and the latest infotainment system. It makes the most sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and are comfortable with front-wheel drive.
• CLA 250 4Matic: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it keeps the same core equipment while adding all-wheel drive. If you want the CLA’s style and comfort with a better all-weather setup, this is the trim to target.
• AMG CLA 35 4Matic: This trim is for you if you want a more performance-focused version of the CLA and are willing to pay for it. It sits above the 250 models and is aimed at buyers who care more about driving character than value.
• AMG CLA 45 4Matic: This is the top performance trim, and it suits you if you want the most aggressive version of the CLA lineup. It is the most specialized choice and makes sense only if you want the strongest performance emphasis.

The safety package includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic high beams, and a driver-drowsiness monitor, but the lane-keeping assist can be overly abrupt.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 387 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.26% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 64.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,003, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA's resale value?

The current average of $21,003 sits slightly below last year's $23,939.

That decline suggests the CLA has become more accessible on the used market, which can help you buy in at a better price today. For a future seller, that also means resale performance will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car was optioned and maintained.

Because the model has a premium badge and strong style appeal, well-kept examples should still attract attention from shoppers who want an upscale compact car. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA safe?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA comes with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, and traction control.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The driver-assistance package includes forward-collision avoidance, automatic high beams, and a driver-drowsiness monitor. The lane-keeping assist is the main caveat: it can react abruptly by braking and jerking the wheel, so you should test that system carefully before buying.

Should I buy a 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 64.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.26% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 redesign brought a more upscale cabin, sharper styling, and a stronger overall luxury feel.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $23,540, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,003 average.
• It carries forward the redesigned CLA’s sharper styling and advanced user interface.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and the model already delivers the redesigned CLA experience. If you can spend more and want the next model year’s carryover refinement, the 2021 is the secondary path.
