For 2020, the McLaren 720S gets a Spider version, which offers all the speed and style of the hardtop, and new exterior paint shades of Belize Blue and Aztec Gold. The 720S Spider is available in Standard, Performance, and Luxury trims.
Behind the seats sits McLaren’s proprietary 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, which in the 720S makes 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. The power goes to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT) with paddle shifters. Both the Coupe and Spider can get from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds. The Spider can reach a top speed of 202 mph.
With Comfort, Sport, or Track driving modes available, the 720S is usable for everyday driving or track days. It comes with an active rear spoiler, and in the Spider, the spoiler changes setting depending on whether the roof is open or closed. The electro-hydraulic steering system is quick, the brakes are carbon-ceramic, and the car’s active suspension system features sensors on each damper that communicate optimum settings to the car’s onboard computer. Sticky Pirelli P Zero tires come standard. Even grippier P Zero Corsas are available as a no-cost option.
Cargo space is tight at 5.3 cubic feet. But there is leather throughout as well as tasteful metallic accents and dual-zone climate control. The Spider’s retractable hardtop can raise or lower in just 11 seconds up to 31 mph. The hardtop itself features electrochromic glazing that allows the glass to switch from tinted to transparent at the push of a button. With the ignition off, the glass reverts to tinted.
The 720S stacks up against the Ferrari 488 Pista, Porsche 911 GT2 RS, and Lamborghini Huracán Performante.
5 Overall rating
(1 reviews)I have several McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini cars. I am a sort of Collector or just a car nut that is always looking for beautiful, great to drive and exciting. I buy some and darn as I am browsing I see something and I trade for new car and that is until that new erge comes along. My cars are always in great condition or I would not own them. If something happens during ownership I fix it and roll on. I am 87 worked hard all my life and now enjoying the fruits of my labor.
