The McLaren 720S, a step above McLaren’s Sports Series models like the 570S, is packed with cutting-edge performance technology. For 2019, the big news in the 720S range is the addition of a Spider trim with a power-folding hardtop, but otherwise the model carries over. The Spider version of the 720S features a power-folding carbon-fiber hardtop that raises or lowers in just 11 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph. Behind the 720S’s pair of seats is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged aluminum V8 engine that is good for an incredible 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, enough for a 2.7-second 0-60 mile per hour sprint and a 212-mph top speed. The screaming V8 drives the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). Fuel economy returns 18 mpg city, 15 highway, and 22 combined. The hardtop 720S and the Spider are available in base, Luxury, and Performance trims. The base trim features a dark palladium exterior trim and the choice between a Nappa-leather-and-Alcantara interior or an all-Alcantara interior. Drivers can opt to add features that can capture real-time track data along with safety features like a 360-degree camera. The Luxury version adds heated power seats and premium leather upholstery with the choice of two additional interior colors, Almond White and Vintage Tan. The Performance version features plenty of carbon fiber inside and outside along with racier two-tone seats. The 720S hasn't been crash tested, which is normal for pricier sports cars. And the 720S features basic safety features like a reversing camera. The 720S is among the quickest cars on the road today, but it is not without competition. The Ferrari 288 Pista and Porsche 911 GT2 RS are worthy alternatives, as is the Lamborghini Huracan Performante.
