The UX was new to the Lexus lineup last year and changes little for 2020. The subcompact five-passenger SUV rides on a 103.9-inch wheelbase, which slots it below the NX and makes it the smallest crossover Lexus builds.

Three front-wheel-drive (FWD) trims are available: UX 200, UX 200 F Sport, and UX 200 Luxury. All are powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. The UX’s continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) puts torque to the ground using 10 simulated gears. The EPA estimates the tiny ute will achieve 29 mpg city, 37 highway, and 33 combined. Three all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid trims (reviewed separately) are also available.

New features for 2020 include the addition of Android Auto, rear cross-traffic alert with blind-spot monitoring (Luxury trim only), and a trial period for Enform, the brand’s suite of connected-services technologies that integrates navigation, safety, and enhanced app operation.

The UX is loaded with tech and safety features even at the base UX 200 trim level. Standard equipment includes Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa integration, a head-up display, four USB ports, and wireless device charging. A 7-inch infotainment screen, dual-zone climate control, and 8-way power-adjustable front seats are also standard. LED headlights, taillights, and 18-inch wheels are included. Standard driver-assist features include collision warning with automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams.

F Sport models add to or replace the UX 200’s standard features with proprietary suspension tuning, paddle shifters, unique 18-inch wheels, F-Sport specific styling, and an 8-inch infotainment screen. The UX 200 Luxury is the top trim and includes the Premium Plus package (heated front seats, sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, and blind-spot monitoring) available on other trims as well as a memory function for the driver’s seat and side mirrors, acoustic front glass, and a power-operated rear hatch with a foot-sweep sensor. It also gets a navigation system with a 10.3-inch infotainment screen.

The UX offers excellent safety ratings as well. It earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and trims equipped with the optional auto-leveling headlights received a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

As luxury SUVs go, the UX is tiny and not tremendously powerful, but it’s packed full of the latest connectivity and safety tech, and it’s certainly efficient. If a genuinely small vehicle will meet your needs, then the UX is worth a look.
