CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Land Rover Defender
overall

Summary
With 446 currently listed for sale and an average price of $37,312, 35.4% of 2020 Land Rover Defenders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Land Rover Defender 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
87.4% of 2020 Defender models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Land Rover Defender stands out as a modern take on an off-road icon, pairing serious trail ability with more comfort and convenience than the name might suggest. It is described as a 4x4 legend, and the test-drive summary emphasizes that the new Defender is not like the old one, while still keeping its core off-road character. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a rugged vehicle that can handle difficult terrain without feeling as spartan as its reputation might imply.
It also brings practical strengths to the table, including spaciousness and strong off-road capability. At the same time, the Defender is not presented as a bargain: poor value for money is a clear drawback, and the interior materials are said to feel cheap. For shoppers, that means the 2020 Defender’s appeal comes less from luxury polish and more from its blend of capability, roominess, and a more comfortable personality than the classic version.

The Defender is a great car, drives better than I thought , was worried it would drive more like a truck, but it’s very smooth on the road and has all the features to be a great off road vehicle as well.

Even so, the market signal is mixed: 35.6% of listings are good or great deals, so you should shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Land Rover Defender reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Reviewers also describe it as practical, sturdy, and dependable, with praise centered on its trouble-free feel, strong build, and the kind of capability you can count on over time.
The powertrain setup is described as smooth and confident, with the mild-hybrid six-cylinder system helping with low-speed response and quicker restarts. Land Rover also notes that the 48-volt system can support accessories for long periods while stopped, which adds to everyday dependability.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about owner sentiment and more about how well the vehicle has been maintained and used, especially if it saw hard off-road duty.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Land Rover Defender?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a rugged SUV like this can hide hard use even when it looks clean on paper. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on underbody condition, suspension wear, and signs of trail damage. Pay close attention to how the cabin and controls have aged, since the interior is described as basic and some materials can feel cheap.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Defender 110 comes with steel wheels, manual seats, and a lousy stereo, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The SE, HSE, X, and First Edition bring features like a heated steering wheel, leather, a 14-speaker Meridian stereo, and accessories such as an integrated air compressor.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with 296 hp and 295 lb-ft, while higher models use a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six with 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The six-cylinder mild-hybrid setup is described as smoother and more responsive, especially at low speeds.
- Safety package: Forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention monitor, and 360-degree cameras come standard. Rear cross-traffic alerts and alerts when exiting the vehicle are optional.
- Infotainment: Pivi Pro uses a 10-inch touchscreen, includes over-the-air software updates, and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 12-inch digital instrument panel is available, along with 4G WiFi and a wireless charger.
- Fuel efficiency: The six-cylinder hybrid is described as more efficient than the larger powertrain setup, but no MPG figure is stated.
Which 2020 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?
The 2020 Land Rover Defender is offered in 6 trim levels: 110, 110 S, 110 SE, HSE, First Edition, and 110 X.
Here's the short version:
- 110: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Defender experience at the lowest price. It comes with the standard four-cylinder engine, but you give up a lot of comfort and convenience equipment.
- 110 S: This is the best-value trim if you want the lower-priced Defender with the standard four-cylinder setup and a more approachable entry cost than the six-cylinder models.
- 110 SE: This is the sweet spot for many shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel and moves you into the six-cylinder hybrid lineup.
- HSE: This trim is for you if you want a more premium Defender with the stronger six-cylinder hybrid and more of the comfort features that make daily use easier.
- First Edition: This is essentially an HSE with special positioning, so it makes sense if you want a well-equipped version with a limited-run feel.
- 110 X: This is the top-end choice if you want the most loaded Defender in this lineup, including the two-tone treatment and the highest equipment level mentioned here.
The safety package includes standard forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention monitor, and 360-degree cameras, while rear cross-traffic alerts and exit warnings remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Land Rover Defender?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 436 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.52% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $37,265, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Land Rover Defender's resale value?
The current average of $37,265 sits slightly below last year's $44,113.
That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than broad market momentum alone.
Because the year’s average price is still within a relatively tight range, well-kept examples should remain easier to position than neglected ones. Strong presentation and a clean history will matter more if you want to protect value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Land Rover Defender safe?
The 2020 Land Rover Defender has not been rated by U.S. crash testing agencies.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention monitor, and 360-degree cameras come standard. Rear cross-traffic alerts and alerts when exiting the vehicle are optional.
One caveat is that it does not come with knee airbags or rear side airbags, with six airbags total.
Should I buy a 2020 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.52% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It delivers a modern, more comfortable take on the Defender while keeping its core off-road character.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $40,545, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $37,265 average.
- It adds the Defender 90 alongside the 110.
The bottom line: If you want the lower average price and a strong mix of owner satisfaction, capability, and available inventory, the 2020 is the smarter starting point. If you want the broader body-style lineup and can spend more, the 2021 is worth a look.
