What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Elantra?

At 63.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body condition, alignment, and how the safety systems and electronics operate in real-world use. If a listing looks unusually cheap, make sure the condition supports the price before you move quickly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SE is the most stripped-down version, with a 5-inch screen, while SEL adds a larger 7-inch display plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Value Edition adds connected-car services, and Limited brings wireless charging and a premium Infinity audio system; Sport adds the most performance-oriented hardware and tech upgrades.
• Powertrain: The standard setup is a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a CVT. Eco uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder and is tuned for better efficiency, while Sport uses a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder with 201 horsepower and a seven-speed DCT.
• Safety package: Hyundai Smart Sense is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a driver attention monitor. SEL adds blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited and Sport add full LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation.
• Infotainment: Base models get a 5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and USB. SEL upgrades to a 7-inch display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM, while Limited can add an 8-inch screen, navigation, Blue Link Guidance, and SiriusXM data services.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard powertrain is rated at 34 mpg in combined driving, while the Eco returns 36 mpg combined.

Which 2020 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2020 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, Limited, and Sport.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Elantra, but it is the most basic version for infotainment and convenience features.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the larger screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and key safety upgrades without pushing the price too far.
• Value Edition: Choose this if you want a nicer ownership experience, including connected-car services, while staying below the higher-end trims.
• Eco: Pick this if efficiency matters most and you want the turbocharged engine with the best combined fuel economy in the lineup.
• Limited: This is the comfort-and-tech choice, with wireless charging, premium audio, and the most upscale feature set short of the sportier model.
• Sport: This is the most engaging version, with the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine and the most performance-focused hardware in the lineup.

Smart Sense is standard on all trim levels, while blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert start with SEL.

What is the 2020 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $13,507 sits slightly above last year's $13,296.

That modest increase suggests the Elantra has held value reasonably well for a compact sedan in this segment. For a future seller, that kind of steady pricing can help support a more predictable resale outcome. It also shows that buyers still respond to the model’s value proposition, even as newer alternatives enter the market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

One caveat is that NHTSA notes a concern about rear-door intrusion on the rear-seat passenger during the side-impact test.

Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.59% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 adds free scheduled maintenance, improved fuel economy ratings, and new standard safety features.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $11,487, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $13,507 average.
• Freshened value pick with a stronger Sport trim.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $15,578, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $13,507 average.
• Redesigned model with broader appeal, more style, and stronger technology.

The bottom line: The 2020 makes the most sense if you want the best mix of value, safety, and low ownership costs. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the cheaper route; if you want a newer-feeling compact sedan, the 2021 is the upgrade path.
