CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback
overall

Summary
With 801 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,863.00, 29.6% of 2020 Honda Civics Hatchbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
58.4% of 2020 Civic Hatchback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback stands out as a small car with real personality. Honda’s own “hottest hatch around” claim is clearly hyperbole, but the car still earns attention as a terrific little hatchback that helps explain why the body style has regained popularity. Its appeal starts with stylish design and continues with the kind of fun-to-drive character that makes it more engaging than many practical commuters.
That balance of style and driving enjoyment is a big part of what makes the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback distinctive. It also fits the Civic nameplate’s long history as a smart, sensible choice, while owners commonly praise its sporty handling, stylish looks, and impressive fuel efficiency. At the same time, the car is not without drawbacks: the available expert test-drive data points to outdated technology, and some owners feel the pricing is high for a used vehicle, especially when compared with new alternatives that offer similar features for less.

Reviewed a 2020 Honda Sport FWD on Dec 31, 2022
To start on the overall the 2020 civic hatchback sport made some MAJOR improvements! Before the 2017-2019 “sport” trim used to take away features that a normal civic EX would have. However in 2020 the sport trim got almost all of the goodies (excluding a few feature like and heated seats) Ranging from a better display to navigation system as well as a ton more informational features that’s are extremely important. Lastly the thing that makes any year civic hatchback amazing is the MPG. I took a 10 hour trip and averaged 47 MPG. If your looking for a efficient gas saving, sporty looking car (also easily moddable) well then let me tell you here’s an option!

The trade-offs are straightforward: the technology feels outdated, and some shoppers think the used pricing is high relative to newer alternatives with similar equipment. That matters most if you want a compact hatchback that leans more toward personality and driving enjoyment than cutting-edge tech.
For you, the appeal is strongest if you want a small car with style, everyday usability, and a fun-to-drive character. With 24.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car people feel good about living with over time, especially because they praise its sporty handling, stylish design, impressive fuel efficiency, and improved sound insulation. That combination suggests a hatchback many buyers can count on for satisfying daily use.
The expert evaluation also describes the car as quiet, refined, and well mannered, which supports the idea that it should be easy to live with over the long haul. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s condition and maintenance history justify the asking price.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback?
At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows signs of uneven panel gaps, paint mismatch, or interior wear. Focus on overall condition, because the market includes a mix of cleaner examples and cars with prior damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is the most basic version, while the Sport Touring adds stitched leather on the steering wheel, soft surfaces, quality materials, a six-speed manual gearbox, and premium audio and navigation equipment. The base trim also misses the 7-inch touchscreen found on higher versions.
- Powertrain: The hatchback uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder. LX, EX, and EX-L make 174 horsepower, while Sport and Sport Touring make 180 horsepower. The CVT and 6-speed manual deliver different torque figures, and the car is described as quiet, refined, and well mannered.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard and includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, Road Departure Mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. CVT-equipped versions also add low-speed following capability. There is no blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert; instead, you get LaneWatch for the right-side blind spot only.
- Infotainment: In all but LX trim, you get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and a volume knob. Sport Touring adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, text-messaging support, navigation, a quick-charging USB port, and a 12-speaker premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test car returned 32 mpg in combined driving, and the testing loop produced 32.7 mpg.
Which 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 4 trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the hatchback. It gets the core Civic Hatchback formula, but you give up the larger touchscreen and the richer feature content found higher up the range.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the car’s stylish look while adding more of the personality that makes the hatchback appealing. It also aligns well with the car’s fun-to-drive character and is the trim most likely to suit you if you want style without stretching to the top end.
- EX: This trim is the middle ground if you want more comfort and equipment without going all the way to the most expensive version. It’s a sensible step up if you care about a better daily experience.
- EX-L: This is the choice if you want the most upscale feel short of the top trim, and it suits you best if comfort and nicer materials matter more than keeping the purchase price down.
Honda Sensing is standard across the lineup, but the lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control are described as aging, and the car lacks blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 24.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 839 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.10% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,461.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?
The current average of $19,775 sits slightly below last year's $21,285.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also suggests the model has already absorbed some of its depreciation. If you plan to sell later, the key will be buying well and keeping the car in strong condition so you’re not starting from an inflated price.
The current market still shows meaningful demand, which can help support future resale if you choose a clean, well-equipped example. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback safe?
It did not earn a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS because of a Poor performance in the headlight category.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, Road Departure Mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. CVT-equipped versions also add low-speed following capability.
The main caveat is that this is an aging version of the system: lane-keeping assist lacked refinement, and adaptive cruise control once braked for no apparent reason during testing. You also do not get blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert, so you should pay close attention to visibility and test the driver-assistance behavior yourself.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 24.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It stands out for stylish design, fun-to-drive character, and improved sound insulation, while also offering a refreshed look and better feature packaging.
The bottom line: If you want the most appealing mix of style, driving enjoyment, and current market value, the 2020 is a strong pick. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it carefully with nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-priced example rather than the newest one you can afford.
