2020 Genesis G90 test drive
overall
A mansion-size luxury sedan on a ranch budget.
The Genesis G90 exists for a very small number of car buyers. The Korean-made flagship of the Hyundai Motor Group is a satisfying car to drive, yet it has no direct competitor. No one who can afford a full-size luxury sedan suffers from sticker shock, and next to a brand-new Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Lexus, or Jaguar, there is no compelling reason to pay less for a Genesis. But against 2- or 3-year-old luxury sedans, a brand-new G90 can make lots of sense—if you're willing to forgo the high-tech features, performance, and cachet of established brands. Even without the discount price, the G90 is an exceptional vehicle on its own. For 2020, it's changing the entire face of Genesis.

The Genesis g90 is a fairly loaded car and is very beautiful. The right quality is outstanding and the car is very spacious, particularly for tall people. The car has autonomous driving but it is not good going around corners.

Is the 2020 Genesis G90 a good car?
Yes — 4.88/5. The expert test-drive rating is 7.67/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners praise the G90 for its luxurious appearance, advanced technology, and outstanding performance, and they also value how much it offers compared with BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. The overview frames it as a full-size luxury sedan with a lot of presence for the money, and it is described as a satisfying car to drive. The trade-offs are clear: the expert notes fairly pedestrian performance and outdated technology.
For you, that means the G90 makes the most sense if you want a large, upscale sedan that leans hard into comfort and value rather than class-leading speed or the newest tech. Good and great deals account for 33.8% of listings, which supports its value-oriented appeal.
Is the 2020 Genesis G90 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with owners saying they can count on its luxury, technology, and performance over the long term. The expert notes that the G90 benefits from cheaper parts shared with more pedestrian cars, and it includes 3 years of scheduled maintenance.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic durability and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Genesis G90?
At 67.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this is a luxury sedan with a lot of standard equipment, you should also make sure the electronics, driver-assistance features, and interior functions all work as intended. Focus on overall condition and maintenance records, since the value proposition depends heavily on getting a clean, well-kept example.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 3.3T and 5.0 trims share the same basic luxury mission, but the 5.0 Ultimate adds rear-seat reclining and personal screens. The base setup already includes a lot, but it does not bring the extra rear-passenger amenities found on the higher trim.
- Powertrain: Two engines are available, both paired with an 8-speed automatic and either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The twin-turbo V6 is the better choice for most buyers, while the V8 adds more output but not much real-world advantage.
- Safety package: Highway Driving Assist comes standard, along with forward and reverse emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, auto high beams, 360-degree cameras, a driver attention monitor, and Safe Exit Assist. There are no trim-level safety gaps noted.
- Infotainment: The G90 uses a unique Genesis interface with a customizable home screen and swipe-and-pinch controls. The displays could be sharper, and the system lacks the newest high-end features found in some rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 AWD configuration is rated at 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. The V8 AWD is rated at 15 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Genesis G90 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Genesis G90 is offered in 2 trim levels: 3.3T and 5.0.
Here's the short version:
- 3.3T: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers. It delivers the twin-turbo V6, strong standard equipment, and the same core luxury experience without paying extra for the V8.
- 5.0: Choose this only if you specifically want the V8 and the rear-seat upgrades in the Ultimate version. It costs more, uses more fuel, and does not meaningfully improve the G90’s everyday character.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Genesis G90?
This looks like a selective buyer’s market, especially if you are shopping carefully and comparing condition over badge prestige.
- Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 65 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 67.7% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2020 Genesis G90 safe?
The 2020 Genesis G90 earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Highway Driving Assist comes standard, and it steers, brakes, and keeps pace with highway traffic. Standard equipment also includes forward and reverse emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, auto high beams, 360-degree cameras, a driver attention monitor, and Safe Exit Assist. The main caveat is that the system help is limited, so you should still expect to stay engaged behind the wheel.
Should I buy a 2020 Genesis G90 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds updated styling and interior touches while keeping the same value-first luxury formula.
Consider the 2021 if:
- Genesis broadens the G90’s appeal with a more world-class luxury image.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest value and can find a clean example, the 2020 is the smart buy. If you care more about the newest presentation and a slightly more polished brand impression, the 2021 is worth a look. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2020 remains the better path because it delivers the core G90 experience with strong standard equipment and a lower entry point.
