CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford Ranger
overall

Summary
With 2,565 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,631.00, 33.1% of 2020 Ford Rangers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Ranger 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
77.2% of 2020 Ranger models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Ranger stands out as a midsize pickup that blends capability with technology. It has decent fuel economy for a pickup truck, and its optional infotainment system is terrific. It also brings towing and hauling ability for tasks like pulling a boat trailer or carrying a truckload of home improvement gear. Those strengths make it appealing to buyers who want a truck that can handle weekend projects and outdoor gear without moving up to a larger pickup.
It is also described as stylish and powered by a powerful engine, which adds to its appeal. At the same time, the Ranger is not especially strong on cabin comfort or everyday driving dynamics, and its interior materials feel cheap. Advanced safety features are not standard, so shoppers who want a more upscale cabin or a fuller list of driver aids may find its compromises more noticeable.

The truck is extremely comfortable and stable on the road. Amenities are more than adequate and the quality exceeds expectations. Power is more than sufficient and although I was concerned about the 10 speed transmission, it operates flawlessly. Very pleased with this truck.

I had a Lariat. It was comfortable for me but not for people over 6 feet tall..It had every feature I wanted except Fords trailer backing system. It was a good value compared to the 150. It handled my 7200 pound boat and trailer on Tennessees hilly roads easily. Unfortunately I crashed it and it was totaled. It protected me in the cabin without serious injuries. I plan to replace it with a 2024 Ranger.

| Year-Round High | $26,850.70 |

Prices have softened 8.43% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,620 listings available, which suggests solid inventory availability.
If you find a listing below $23,764.37, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Ford Ranger earns a 4.79/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise its great value, enjoyable driving experience, comfortable ride, sufficient power, and high-quality features. It also fits well if you want a midsize pickup that can handle towing, hauling, weekend projects, and outdoor gear without stepping up to a larger truck.
The trade-offs are clear: the cabin materials feel cheap, and advanced safety features are not standard. That matters most if you want a more upscale interior or a fuller driver-assistance roster.
With 32.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as a truck with great value, enjoyable driving, sufficient power, and high-quality features, which points to a dependable ownership experience. The powertrain is straightforward, and the truck’s strong towing and hauling ability supports the idea that it can handle regular use with confidence.
Ford also includes FordPass Connect on the base trim, and remote start is included for a year. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the transmission recall history and overall condition are clean before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Ranger?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
Start with a history report so you can confirm accident status, recall completion, and ownership patterns. Then prioritize a hands-on inspection of the cabin, drivetrain, and electronics, since the truck’s value depends heavily on condition and feature functionality. Focus especially on whether the truck has the equipment you want, because the trim spread changes comfort and tech quite a bit.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL comes with vinyl floors, manual air conditioning, cloth upholstery, four-way manually adjustable front seats, and only basic connectivity, while the XLT adds dual-zone climate control, cruise control, a 4.2-inch color instrument panel screen, and Ford SYNC 3. The Lariat adds leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, push-button start, ambient cabin lighting, and a premium sound system.
- Powertrain: All trims use a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, paired with a ten-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and 4WD is available. Fuel economy is 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined with RWD and 22 mpg city, 24 highway, 22 combined with 4WD.
- Safety package: Ford CoPilot 360 adds lane-departure warning and avoidance, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse parking sensors. An available Technology Package adds forward parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. These features are not standard on every trim.
- Infotainment: The XLT brings an 8-inch touchscreen with SYNC 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and available voice-activated navigation with pinch-to-zoom. The XL stays basic with an AM/FM stereo, four speakers, Bluetooth, and a USB port.
- Fuel efficiency: The Ranger returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined with rear-wheel drive and 22 mpg city, 24 highway, 22 combined with 4WD.
Which 2020 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The XL is the most stripped-down choice, with vinyl floors, manual air conditioning, cloth upholstery, four-way manually adjustable front seats, and only basic audio and connectivity. It also misses the richer tech and driver-assistance content found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLT is the best value because it adds the features most shoppers will notice every day, including dual-zone climate control, cruise control, SYNC 3, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Ford CoPilot 360.
- Premium/top trim: The Lariat is the right pick if you want the most upscale cabin, with leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, push-button start, ambient lighting, and a premium B&O sound system.
Ford CoPilot 360 is the key safety-package upgrade to look for if you want a fuller driver-assistance set.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Ranger?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep distress pricing.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,620 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,764.37, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $24,590 sits slightly below last year's $26,854.
That price movement suggests the Ranger has already absorbed some near-term depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside than a buyer who paid closer to last year’s average. Strong condition and desirable equipment should matter more when you eventually sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger safe?
The Ranger earns Good scores in most IIHS crash tests, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in most crash tests, four-star ratings in front passenger side testing, and three-star ratings in rollover crash testing.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford CoPilot 360 adds lane-departure warning and avoidance, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse parking sensors. An available Technology Package adds forward parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. Those features are helpful, but they are not standard across the lineup.
The main caveat is that the Ranger’s passenger-side small-overlap result trails its stronger crash-test performance elsewhere, and advanced safety features are not standard on the base trim.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It blends towing, hauling, and technology in a way that suits weekend projects and outdoor gear.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $23,127, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $24,590 average.
- It offers a simple single-engine setup with a clear price-and-power focus.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,715, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $24,590 average.
- It adds Tremor-focused off-road capability and more everyday practicality.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, capability, and tech, the 2020 is the strongest all-around choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer off-road-oriented setup and can justify the higher cost.
