CarGurus Analysis: 2020 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 123 currently listed for sale near Tucson, AZ and an average price of $21,368.00, 26.0% of 2020 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars.
94.3% of 2020 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW 5 Series sits in the seventh-generation G30 family, which had already shifted the nameplate toward a more comfortable luxury sedan with only a bit of the old sporting edge. By this point, the regular 5 Series models were described as a little soft, with steering that was not as precise or engaging as earlier versions, and the car’s understated styling gave it a lower-profile look than many modern BMWs. Even so, it remained a 5 Series, so it still brought more driving enjoyment than many of its staid competitors.
For 2020, BMW added a larger battery to the plug-in hybrid version, giving it 21 miles of all-electric range, and also added 67 horsepower and 73 lb-ft of torque to the M550i. That same year, the 5 Series continued to offer a broad spread of powertrains, from the 530i’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque to the 540i’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The lineup also included the 530e plug-in hybrid, the 540d diesel, and the M550i xDrive with its 4.4-liter turbocharged V8, making the G30 one of the more varied midsize luxury sedans of its time.
The 2020 5 Series also stood out for its safety equipment and technology. Every model came standard with blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams, while features such as hands-free parking, adaptive cruise control, and surround view monitoring remained optional. Buyers also got BMW’s iDrive system and a cabin that reviewers generally liked for its comfort and equipment, though some noted that the steering and suspension did not feel as engaging as older 5 Series models and that upkeep could still be costly.

I was skeptical on the power of the M550 since Im coming from a boosted mustang, but the acceleration impresses me. Lots of cool features, too many if you ask me. Remote start is missing from the 2020 and older M550s.

| Change vs. Last Year | −7.23% |
Prices have softened 7.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,189 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $24,767.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for this model year.
The 2020 BMW 5 Series is a comfort-first luxury sedan with a lower-profile design and a driving feel that still keeps some of BMW’s traditional appeal. It offers a broad range of powertrains, from efficient four-cylinder and plug-in hybrid options to stronger six- and eight-cylinder choices, so you can match the car to your priorities. It also brings a well-equipped cabin and a strong standard safety and tech package, which makes it appealing if you want a refined midsize sedan with plenty of features.
29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2020 BMW 5 Series is described as a comfortable luxury sedan with a strong equipment list, but it also comes with the kind of upkeep costs you should expect from a premium German car. Its broad powertrain lineup and available technology can make it a rewarding used buy, but complexity can also mean more to evaluate before you commit.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is paying for repairs and maintenance if the car was not well cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 5 Series?
At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was cosmetic or structural. Put inspection priority on body panels, paint consistency, tire wear, and suspension feel, since those can reveal whether the car has been repaired properly. Focus on overall condition and maintenance records, especially because this is a luxury sedan where deferred upkeep can become expensive.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 5 Series?
This looks like a moderate market where selective buyers can still find value if they shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,189 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,767.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $25,736 sits slightly below last year's $27,742.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale may depend heavily on how well you maintain the car and how clean its history is. A well-kept example with strong records should hold up better than one with accident history or deferred maintenance. Because this is a premium sedan, condition and documentation matter a lot when it comes time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $28,963, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $25,736 average.
- It adds a midcycle refresh with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and a bigger infotainment touchscreen.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because pricing has eased and inventory is healthy. If you want the newer refresh and can stretch your budget, the 2021 is the cleaner upgrade path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2020 makes more sense; for shoppers prioritizing newer tech, the 2021 is worth the extra spend.
