CarGurus Analysis: 2020 BMW 3 Series
overall

Summary
With 136 currently listed for sale near Phoenix, AZ and an average price of $26,137, 31.6% of 2020 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 BMW 3 Series 4.14 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW 3 Series stands out as a sedan built for drivers who care as much about the experience behind the wheel as they do about everyday comfort. BMW’s own summary says the arrival of the 2020 BMW M340i, positioned between the existing 330i and the forthcoming M3, shows there is substance behind the brand’s “The Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan. That makes the 2020 3 Series especially appealing to shoppers who want a car with a performance-first personality rather than a purely practical one.
At the same time, this BMW is not just about sharp responses and power. The test-drive data highlights that it is fun to drive, comfortable, and powered by a strong engine, which gives it a broad appeal for buyers who want a sporty sedan that can still work well in daily use. The tradeoff is that its design may be polarizing, and it is described as poor value for money, so it is best suited to buyers who prioritize driving enjoyment and refinement over bargain pricing.
Owner feedback generally reinforces that impression, with praise for the car’s design, performance, and comfortable interior. Some reviewers also noted that the cabin can feel a bit cramped for taller occupants and that interior noise can be distracting, which are worth considering for anyone weighing the 2020 BMW 3 Series against its strengths.

Purchased the 2020 M340 , so far so good . I actually had an S4 previously. They are really similar but M340 takes the performance to the next level .

I have test driven only the M 340. It is excellent. I am currently driving an M240 convertible and if I was not a lover of the open sky would definitely trade this in. The power delivery is excellent and the interior is well appointed. I love the tactile feel. The steering wheel is a nice touch. The only criticism is that getting into the back can be a bit of a chore if you are over 6 feet.

Simply it seemed to me that the BMW 3 is great but being a big guy I find it a bit too small in the cabin. .

How much does the 2020 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,931 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,621 |
| Year-Round High | $25,843 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,521 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.23% |
Prices have softened 6.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,525 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.14/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating, which points to a car that resonates with shoppers and testers alike. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
User feedback repeatedly highlights the car’s beautiful design, strong performance, and comfortable interior. The overview also frames it as a sedan for drivers who care about the experience behind the wheel, while the expert notes reinforce that it is fun to drive and powered by a strong engine.
The trade-offs are clear: the design may be polarizing, and the car is described as poor value for money. That means you should view it as a driver-focused luxury sedan rather than a bargain play. With 33.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market does offer some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback suggests the car can be reliable and dependable in the ways that matter to owners who plan to keep it, with praise centered on the overall driving and ownership experience. The expert notes also describe it as a car that delivers a legendary experience and, for enthusiasts, real value in the long run.
You also get free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership, which helps soften early ownership costs. Even so, used buyers should still budget carefully for upkeep and verify that prior maintenance was done on schedule.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
At 72.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or heavily optioned example. Pay close attention to body condition, interior wear, and whether the car’s equipment matches the listing, since this model can be expensive when options are added.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 330i starts with a high price, while the M340i adds a much more performance-focused character and a richer equipment set. The cabin design and materials are a strength, but the entry car still asks a lot of you financially.
- Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive. It is tuned for strong acceleration and engaging handling.
- Safety package: To get the latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need two Driving Assistance option packages. The suite includes lane-keeping assist, but the expert notes say the systems can feel abrupt and are not especially smooth.
- Infotainment: The system uses a touchscreen display, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the familiar console knob and buttons. Gesture control is optional, and the voice system can handle natural commands for navigation, climate, and audio.
- Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the available data.
Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i and M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the trim to consider if you want the core 3 Series experience without stretching to the top of the range. It keeps the car’s premium feel and everyday usability, but the data makes clear that the price still starts high, so it suits you best if you value the badge and chassis more than maximum performance.
- M340i: This is the best-value trim if you want the strongest version of the car’s personality. It adds the turbocharged inline-6, xDrive, and the most enthusiast-focused setup in the lineup, and the expert specifically says it is worth the added cost if you can afford it.
To get the latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need to add two Driving Assistance option packages.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and be ready to move when you find the right car.
- Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,525 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,621, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $23,931 sits slightly below last year's $25,521.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the recent softening means resale gains may be harder to realize unless the car is especially well kept or well equipped.
The 3 Series still benefits from strong enthusiast appeal, and that can help support demand when you eventually sell. Well-maintained examples with desirable equipment should hold up better than neglected cars with heavy wear or accident history.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
To equip the car with all of BMW’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need two Driving Assistance option packages. The available systems include lane-keeping assist, and the expert notes say they can be accurate but sometimes abrupt or less smooth than you might want.
That means safety-minded shoppers should pay close attention to equipment level, because the most advanced features are not standard across the lineup. If you want the strongest safety setup, verify the headlight and driver-assistance configuration before you buy.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- BMW’s 2020 update brings a stronger performance-first personality, especially with the M340i.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $20,714, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,931 average.
- It keeps the familiar sport-sedan formula with a more modern software feel.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,396, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,931 average.
- It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid option for buyers who want more efficiency.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of performance and current-market value, the 2020 is the one to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better budget path, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer lineup and are willing to pay more.
