Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW 3 Series stands out as a sedan built for drivers who care as much about the experience behind the wheel as they do about everyday comfort. BMW’s own summary ties that appeal to the arrival of the 2020 BMW M340i, which sits between the existing 330i and the forthcoming M3, and says the company proves there is substance behind its “Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan. That positioning helps explain why the 2020 3 Series is easy to shortlist: it is meant to deliver a more engaging drive without giving up the comfort expected in a premium sedan.
Its strengths are straightforward. BMW highlights that it is fun to drive, comfortable, and powered by a powerful engine. Those traits make it appealing to buyers who want a car that feels lively and polished at the same time. At the same time, the 2020 BMW 3 Series is not without drawbacks. BMW notes that its design may be polarizing and that it is poor value for money, so shoppers drawn to its driving character may still want to weigh styling and pricing carefully.

I have test driven only the M 340. It is excellent. I am currently driving an M240 convertible and if I was not a lover of the open sky would definitely trade this in. The power delivery is excellent and the interior is well appointed. I love the tactile feel. The steering wheel is a nice touch. The only criticism is that getting into the back can be a bit of a chore if you are over 6 feet.

Simply it seemed to me that the BMW 3 is great but being a big guy I find it a bit too small in the cabin. .

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Generally — 4.14/5 from owners and 8.17/10 from our experts point to a car that lands well with shoppers who value driving feel. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Drivers repeatedly praise its beautiful design, performance, and comfortable interior, and the M340 variant gets especially strong marks for power and driving dynamics. The trade-offs are familiar: some owners mention cramped cabin space for taller people and a distracting interior noise level, while BMW also flags the design as potentially polarizing and the value proposition as weak.
That lines up with the overview: you’re looking at a premium sedan aimed at buyers who want an engaging drive without giving up everyday comfort. If that’s your priority, the 2020 3 Series makes a strong case for itself, especially if you’re shopping the better-equipped listings. 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a car that many drivers found comfortable and enjoyable enough to keep recommending, with praise centered on performance and a well-liked interior.
BMW’s performance notes reinforce that this is a well-engineered sedan with strong hardware and a transmission tuned for real-world use. The cost-effectiveness notes also help on ownership planning: free scheduled maintenance is included for the first three years or 36,000 miles.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright satisfaction and more about keeping ownership costs and condition in check, especially on higher-spec examples.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-priced or option-heavy example. Focus on condition, equipment, and whether the car’s premium features still work as intended, since this model can be expensive to buy and equip.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 330i starts with a high price and leaves you wanting if you care about the richer appearance and personalization options highlighted on higher-spec cars. The M340i adds the more dramatic look and feel, along with a much more serious performance character.
- Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW says it reaches 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.
- Safety package: To get BMW’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need to option two Driving Assistance packages. The systems can work accurately, but BMW notes that smoothness can be inconsistent, and lane-keeping assist can feel abrupt.
- Infotainment: The latest iDrive setup includes a touchscreen, natural voice recognition, and gesture control, along with the familiar controller and buttons. The touchscreen is easy to use, while gesture control is optional.
- Fuel efficiency: No mpg figures are provided here.
Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i, M340i.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The 330i is the entry point, but it starts at a high price and doesn’t deliver the richer visual presence or performance punch of the M340i.
- Premium/top trim: The M340i is the one to target if you want the strongest blend of performance, luxury feel, and enthusiast appeal.
The safety-package note is simple: if you want BMW’s latest driver-assistance systems, you need to add the Driving Assistance packages.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,504 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.37% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,670.92, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $23,844 sits slightly below last year's $25,742.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to resell later, a lower entry price can reduce the amount of value you need to recover. Strong demand for well-kept examples should still help, especially for cars with desirable equipment and cleaner histories.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 3 Series a Top Safety Pick+ rating when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW says you need two Driving Assistance packages to get all of its latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The systems can be accurate, but BMW also notes that smoothness is sometimes lacking, and the lane-keeping assist can feel abrupt. That means you should pay close attention to which safety equipment is actually installed on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- BMW says the M340i proves there is substance behind the “Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $20,882, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,844 average.
- It leans hard into BMW’s traditional sport-sedan formula and adds a stronger software focus.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,863, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,844 average.
- It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid and broadens the lineup with more tech-forward appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of driving enjoyment and current-market value, the 2020 is the one to target. If your priority is spending less, the 2019 is the smarter budget play. If you want a newer-feeling lineup with more electrified choice, the 2021 is worth a look.
