How much does the 2020 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 6.36% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,449 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.14/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its beautiful design, strong performance, and comfortable interior. The review summary also points to a car that feels especially appealing in M340 form, where the driving dynamics and power stand out most.

The trade-offs are clear: the design can be polarizing, and value for money is a recurring concern. The expert notes also frame it as a sedan for buyers who care more about driving enjoyment and refinement than bargain pricing.

If you want a sporty luxury sedan that still works in daily use, this year’s 3 Series fits that brief well. If your priority is maximizing features per dollar, the market context suggests you should compare carefully before committing.

35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The review summary points to a car that many drivers find dependable in the ways that matter most to them: strong performance, a comfortable cabin, and an ownership experience they feel good about over time. That kind of feedback matters when you’re trying to judge whether a used luxury sedan will hold up to regular use.

The expert notes also reinforce that this is a well-engineered car with a strong powertrain and a polished driving character, which supports confidence in everyday dependability. On the ownership side, BMW includes free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles, which can help reduce early running costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a premium performance sedan can become expensive if prior maintenance was skipped or if options and repairs stack up.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-trim or heavily optioned car. Pay close attention to bodywork quality, interior condition, and whether the car feels as tight and refined as it should on a test drive.

Because this model is positioned as a driver’s car, you should also focus on signs of hard use: uneven tire wear, brake condition, and any evidence that the car was driven aggressively or maintained on a tight budget.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 330i starts at a much lower price than the M340i, and the M340i adds a more serious performance character along with xDrive all-wheel drive. The cabin also offers a variety of interior colors and materials, so you should check whether the car you’re considering has the look and feel you want.
• Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The expert notes emphasize strong acceleration, excellent handling, and a very engaging driving experience.
• Safety package: To get BMW’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need two Driving Assistance option packages. The standard feature list includes adaptive full LED headlights for the Top Safety Pick+ result, while the expert notes say the systems can be accurate but not always smooth.
• Infotainment: The system uses a touchscreen display, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the center-console knob and buttons. The touchscreen is described as intuitive, and the voice assistant can handle natural commands for navigation, climate control, and audio.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert data does not state MPG or MPGe figures.

Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i and M340i.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the entry point, and it makes the most sense if you want the 3 Series experience without paying for the performance hardware and higher sticker price of the M340i. The expert notes suggest that many driving enthusiasts would still be happy here, especially if you want to save money while keeping the core BMW character.
• M340i: This is the best-value trim if you care most about performance. It adds the turbocharged inline-six, xDrive, a rear M Sport differential, and M Sport brakes, and the expert review makes clear that it delivers the most rewarding driving experience in the lineup.

BMW says you need the two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of the brand’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,449 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.36% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 72.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,612, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $23,883 sits slightly below last year's $25,506.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than just the badge alone.

Because this model is still desirable to buyers who want a sporty luxury sedan, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. The strongest cars will be the ones with clean history, strong maintenance records, and the right mix of features.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW’s advanced driver-assistance systems are bundled through two Driving Assistance option packages, and the expert notes say they can be accurate when used. Standard safety-related equipment includes adaptive full LED headlights, which are tied to the IIHS result.

The main caveat is that the systems are not always smooth, and the lane-keeping assist can feel abrupt. If you want the fullest safety tech setup, you should verify that the car has the right option packages before you buy.

Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.36% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• BMW’s own summary says the 2020 M340i proves there is substance behind the brand’s performance-first slogan.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $20,469, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,883 average.
• It keeps the 3 Series’ sporty, premium character while adding a stronger software focus.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $25,432, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,883 average.
• It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid model and leans more toward comfort and convenience.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of performance and value in this generation, the 2020 is the one to target. If price is your top priority, the 2019 can save you money while preserving much of the same core appeal. If you want a newer-feeling lineup with a plug-in hybrid option, the 2021 is worth a look, but you’ll pay more for it.
