How much does the 2020 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 9.90% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,433 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.1/5 user-rated sedan with an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the beautiful design, strong performance, and comfortable interior, and many also highlight the M340 variant’s power and driving dynamics. The test-drive notes back that up with a fun-to-drive character and a strong engine, while the overview frames it as a car for drivers who care about how a car feels from behind the wheel. The main trade-offs are a potentially polarizing design and poor value for money, so this makes the most sense if you prioritize driving enjoyment and brand character over bargain pricing. Good and great deals account for 34.8% of listings, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.1/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with, especially when it comes to design, performance, and comfort. The same feedback also suggests the car can be a dependable-feeling daily driver for buyers who value the driving experience and expect the car to hold up as a premium ownership choice. BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership, which helps soften early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that premium pricing and optional equipment can make repairs and upkeep more expensive than you might expect.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

At 67.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on condition, because the market includes a sizable share of cars with accident history, and the difference between a clean example and a repaired one can matter a lot in a premium sedan. Pay close attention to how the car drives, how the cabin presents, and whether any optional equipment you want is actually installed.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 330i starts at $40,750 and the M340i rises to $56,000 with xDrive, so the cheaper trim is the better value if you want the core experience without stretching for the performance model. The M340i adds the more dramatic driving character and a more upscale feel, but the source also notes that the base car is already satisfying for enthusiasts who want to save money.
• Powertrain: The M340i uses a robust turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The notes emphasize strong acceleration, excellent sport transmission behavior, and a car that feels especially rewarding when driven hard.
• Safety package: To get BMW’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need two Driving Assistance option packages. The standard feature list is not fully detailed here, and the notes suggest the systems can be a bit abrupt, especially lane-keeping assist.
• Infotainment: The system includes a touchscreen display, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the familiar knob and buttons on the center console. The voice assistant is described as excellent, and the touchscreen is praised for being intuitive and easy to use.
• Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the available data.

Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i and M340i.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the trim to target if you want the core 3 Series experience at the lowest entry price. The source says most driving enthusiasts would be quite happy with it while saving themselves $10,000, which makes it the best-value choice for shoppers who care more about balance than outright performance.
• M340i: This is the pick if you want the most exciting version of the lineup. It adds the strongest engine, sharper driving dynamics, and the kind of engineering package that makes the car feel special, but it also comes with a much higher price tag.

The safety package requires two Driving Assistance option packages, so check carefully for the features you want before you buy.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,433 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.90% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 67.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,219, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $23,219 sits slightly below last year's $25,769.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the softer trend means you should expect buyers to remain price sensitive unless your car is especially clean, well equipped, and well documented. Strong condition and desirable equipment matter more when the broader market is already drifting downward.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.1/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

To equip the car with BMW’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems, you need two Driving Assistance option packages. The notes say the systems are accurate when used, but smoothness can be inconsistent, and the lane-keeping assist is described as abrupt. That means you should verify which safety features are installed on any used example, especially if you want the full suite rather than a lightly equipped car.

Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 67.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.90% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.1/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• BMW’s M340i gives the lineup a standout performance halo and reinforces the brand’s driving-focused identity.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $19,962, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,219 average.
• It emphasizes BMW’s traditional sport-sedan formula with a sharper software update.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $24,912, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,219 average.
• It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid for buyers who want an efficiency-focused option.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of price, performance, and market availability, the 2020 is the primary path to consider. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money while keeping the core 3 Series character intact.
