Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $12,385, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $12,717 average.
• It adds a sportier feel with an upgraded engine and a new GT trim.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $14,167, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $12,717 average.
• It gets a refresh that improves the cabin’s space-and-value appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2019 is the primary year to target. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2018 is the better value play, while the 2020 makes sense if you want the newer refresh and are willing to pay more.
