Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon stands out as a stylish alternative to the familiar crossover SUV formula. It is aimed at drivers who want a roomy and practical vehicle with added foul-weather traction, but who do not want to drive one of the same SUVs as everyone else. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal: it offers everyday usefulness without leaning into the look and feel of the typical family hauler.
Beyond its design, the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon is described as fun to drive and an excellent value for money. Those strengths make it appealing to buyers who want something more engaging than the average practical vehicle. The main drawback noted is unintuitive technology, so while the Arteon has a lot going for it, its controls may take some getting used to.

Until recently I had a 17 Passat R-line 1.8T (totalled unfortunately). I test drove the Arteon R-line and was impressed with the power (268 HP), but... It was a far more expensive car, but really offered nothing more than the Passat, other than the additional 98 horsepower. I test drove a used 19 Arteon (asking price 28,500), and didnt feel that the value was there. I would be more likely to buy a 22 Passat R-line 2.0T for a slightly higher price.

| Year-Round Low | $18,123 |
| Year-Round High | $19,842 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,761 |

With 76 listings available, you have a relatively small pool to compare, so it pays to move quickly when you find the right one.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?
Generally — the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.
The data points to a car that is meant for you if you want a roomy, practical alternative to a crossover SUV without giving up style or driving enjoyment. The overview emphasizes its distinctive appeal as an everyday-use vehicle that avoids the typical family-hauler look, and the expert review backs that up with praise for its stylish design and strong value.
The trade-offs are clear: the technology can be unintuitive, and the expert review notes that the voice recognition system is not especially rewarding to use. It also points out some packaging quirks around connected services.
The market supports that case, with 35.5% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview describes the Arteon as a roomy, practical vehicle with added foul-weather traction, and the expert review reinforces that it is comfortable, enjoyable to drive, and practical in daily use. The performance notes also suggest a well-sorted drivetrain and chassis, with the car exceeding its EPA combined estimate in testing at 23.9 mpg and using adaptive damping and variable-ratio steering to balance comfort and responsiveness.
The expert review also notes that the car can feel like a sanctuary on the road, which supports the idea that it is built for relaxed, repeatable use rather than constant fuss. If you buy used, the main long-term risk is that technology and packaging quirks may be more annoying over time than mechanical durability issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Arteon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are shopping from the lower end of the price range. Focus on overall condition, because the car’s appeal depends heavily on how well its styling, cabin quality, and technology have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base car starts with a clean, upscale look and a roomy hatchback body, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment. The biggest feature gaps show up in the upper trims, where you gain more advanced tech and safety equipment.
- Powertrain: The Arteon uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. It is tuned for real-world quickness and can return 23.9 mpg in combined driving in testing.
- Safety package: Every Arteon includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. SEL adds adaptive headlights, while SEL Premium adds automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
- Infotainment: The standard setup includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Car-Net App Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirror Link. Navigation is standard with SEL, and SEL Premium adds the premium audio system and Car-Net subscription services.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test loop returned 23.9 mpg, and the review says the car gets better gas mileage than a typical SUV while still offering AWD for foul-weather driving.
Which 2019 Volkswagen Arteon trim should I buy?
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in 3 trim levels: Arteon SE, Arteon SEL, Arteon SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion.
Here's the short version:
- Arteon SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Arteon experience: the stylish fastback body, standard smartphone integration, and the practical, roomy cabin. It makes sense if you want the look and usefulness without paying for extra tech.
- Arteon SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds navigation, Digital Cockpit instrumentation, adaptive headlights, and more of the premium feel that makes the Arteon stand out. If you want the strongest mix of equipment and price, this is the one to target.
- Arteon SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion: This is the top trim for shoppers who want the most equipment, including the premium sound system, Car-Net subscription services, parking steering assistant, surround-view camera, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. It is the pick if you want the most complete version of the car.
The safety-package upgrades are spread across the lineup, so if driver-assistance features matter most to you, the higher trims are worth a close look.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Arteon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 76 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.37% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,123, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon's resale value?
The current average of $18,502 sits slightly below last year's $19,761.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. The current trend points to a market that rewards well-kept examples rather than average-condition cars.
Because the year’s pricing has already moved down, a clean, well-optioned Arteon should be easier to sell than a neglected one. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon safe?
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon earns a Poor rating from IIHS headlight testing, which keeps it from earning a Top Safety Pick rating.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Arteon includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. SEL adds adaptive headlights, while SEL Premium adds automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
The weak headlight performance is the main safety caveat to keep in mind, even though the rest of the safety package is strong.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Arteon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 stands out as a stylish alternative to the crossover SUV formula, with strong practicality and a fun-to-drive character.
The bottom line: If you want the Arteon’s distinctive styling, roomy hatchback utility, and strong value, the 2019 is the right year to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping for the cleanest example you can find and use the softer market to your advantage.
