Why it stands out
The 2019 Nissan Maxima stands out as Nissan’s premier sedan, combining considerable power and style with a premium midsize feel. It has endured for eight generations, and its reputation has been built over the past three decades on powerful V6 engines and crisp handling. That mix gives it a more engaging character than many shoppers expect from a sedan in this class.
For 2019, Nissan refreshed the Maxima ever so mildly, updating its style, technology, and interior features. In testing, it also impressed with great ride quality and premium interior materials. Those strengths help make it appealing to buyers who want a comfortable, upscale-feeling sedan with a sporty edge.
The tradeoffs are worth noting, though. The Maxima’s technology is described as outdated, and its design may be polarizing. Even so, for drivers who value strong performance, good handling, and a plush cabin, the 2019 Nissan Maxima remains a distinctive choice.

Excellent power, especially in sport mode. Fuel economy is on the low end with lots of city driving. Good fit and finish; doesnt feel cheap. The leather seats are plush, but durable. Good noise level at high speeds. Very little vibration on rough roads. Odd rattle in the back which sounds like a loose seat lock, but the seats are secure. Rear factory tint is bubbling after 2.5 years.

The Maxima’s premium midsize positioning and refreshed 2019 updates make it appealing if you want a comfortable, upscale-feeling sedan with a sporty edge. 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a car that many drivers find dependable and trouble-free enough to enjoy over the long term, with strong performance and a comfortable cabin reinforcing that confidence. The expert evaluation also describes the Maxima as a good value and notes that it remains one of the few 6-cylinder sedans offered by a non-luxury manufacturer, which supports the case for durable ownership appeal.
The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest the Maxima’s ownership proposition is helped by its value relative to some pricier alternatives. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a car with this much performance and age can be more sensitive to maintenance history and prior wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Nissan Maxima?
At 52.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and prioritize any listing with incomplete records or inconsistent condition notes. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re comparing cars with similar prices but different cosmetic or mechanical wear. Focus on how the car presents inside and out, since the Maxima’s appeal depends heavily on cabin quality, ride feel, and overall upkeep.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SV stands out for upgraded interior materials, contrast stitching, tight panel gaps, and a more upscale feel than lower trims. The Platinum Reserve adds semi-aniline saddle-colored leather with diamond quilting and bronze-colored trim, while the SR brings a sportier look with a decklid spoiler and black 20-inch rims. The base S is the one to watch closely because it does not come with navigation.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The engine is praised for immediate, smooth thrust and strong passing power, while fuel economy is rated at 20 mpg city, 30 highway, and 24 combined.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and knee airbags for both front occupants. The SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
- Infotainment: Most trims get an updated navigation system, while the base S does not. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system includes a customizable home screen, online destination lookup, a high-speed USB-C port, and compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: The Maxima is rated at 20 mpg city, 30 highway, and 24 combined.
Which 2019 Nissan Maxima trim should I buy?
The 2019 Nissan Maxima is offered in 6 trim levels: S, SV, SL, SR, Platinum, Platinum Reserve.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it skips navigation, so it makes the most sense only if you want the lowest-cost way into the Maxima nameplate and can live without some convenience tech.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control while keeping the Maxima’s upscale cabin feel and strong feature set.
- SL: Choose this if you want a more comfort-oriented setup with the Maxima’s premium feel and a richer equipment mix than the lower trims.
- SR: Pick this if you want the sportier appearance and firmer tuning, along with pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning.
- Platinum: This is the better choice if you want a more fully loaded Maxima with added safety equipment and a more upscale overall presentation.
- Platinum Reserve: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with semi-aniline leather and the most premium interior treatment in the lineup.
For safety, the SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Nissan Maxima?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 567 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.45% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,744, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Nissan Maxima's resale value?
The current average of $17,069 sits slightly below last year's $18,442.
That decline suggests the Maxima has become more affordable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. The current range still leaves room for stronger examples to hold value better than rougher ones, especially if they have clean history and desirable equipment.
Because the market has softened, your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim. Well-kept cars with strong equipment and clear records should be easier to move than examples with accident history or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima safe?
The 2019 Nissan Maxima earns five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with four-star ratings for the front-passenger side in a frontal crash and for the side-impact pole test. It is also an IIHS Top Safety Pick.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward-emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and knee airbags for both front occupants. The SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
One caveat is that the Maxima does not offer ProPilot Assist, so it misses a semi-automated driving feature that some shoppers may expect in a 2019 model.
Should I buy a 2019 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It was refreshed for 2019 with updated style, technology, and interior features.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $17,359, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $17,069 average.
- It adds a more spacious, comfort-focused feel with a luxe interior and roomy trunk.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the stronger starting point because prices have eased and the model still delivers the Maxima’s core strengths. If you’re willing to pay a bit more for a newer example and want the slightly more spacious, comfort-oriented direction of the next year, the 2020 is worth a look.
