Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Nissan Maxima 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Nissan Maxima stands out as Nissan’s premier sedan, combining considerable power and style with a premium midsize feel. It has endured for eight generations, and its reputation has been built over the past three decades on powerful V6 engines and crisp handling. That mix gives it a more engaging character than many shoppers expect from a sedan in this class.
For 2019, Nissan refreshed the Maxima ever so mildly, updating its style, technology, and interior features. In testing, it also impressed with great ride quality and premium interior materials. Those strengths help make it appealing to buyers who want a comfortable, upscale-feeling sedan with a sporty edge.
The tradeoffs are worth noting, though. The Maxima’s technology is described as outdated, and its design may be polarizing. Even so, for drivers who value strong performance, good handling, and a plush cabin, the 2019 Nissan Maxima remains a distinctive choice.

Excellent power, especially in sport mode. Fuel economy is on the low end with lots of city driving. Good fit and finish; doesnt feel cheap. The leather seats are plush, but durable. Good noise level at high speeds. Very little vibration on rough roads. Odd rattle in the back which sounds like a loose seat lock, but the seats are secure. Rear factory tint is bubbling after 2.5 years.

Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Nissan Maxima earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, stylish appearance, and comfortable interior. The review summary also points to good handling and plush leather seats, which fits the Maxima’s upscale, sporty personality.
The trade-offs are the outdated technology and the polarizing design. In practical terms, this is a sedan that makes the most sense if you want a comfortable, premium-feeling daily driver with a stronger personality than many mainstream rivals.
With 25.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary also points to a car that many drivers find dependable and trouble-free enough to enjoy over time, with praise centered on its strong performance and comfortable, plush cabin. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the Maxima as a good value and one of the few 6-cylinder sedans offered by a non-luxury manufacturer.
You should still pay close attention to maintenance records and overall condition, since used examples can vary in how well they’ve been cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Nissan Maxima?
At 51.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on bodywork quality, signs of prior repair, interior wear, and whether the technology and driver-assistance features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S skips navigation, while higher trims add more upscale materials and equipment; the Platinum Reserve stands out with semi-aniline leather and bronze-colored trim.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and knee airbags for both front occupants; the SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and most trims get updated navigation; the base S does not. The system also includes a high-speed USB-C port and remote services.
- Fuel efficiency: The Maxima is rated at 20 mpg city, 30 highway, and 24 combined.
Which 2019 Nissan Maxima trim should I buy?
The 2019 Nissan Maxima is offered in 6 trim levels: S, SV, SL, SR, Platinum, Platinum Reserve.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it misses navigation, so it makes the most sense only if you want the lowest price and can live with the least equipment.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and the updated navigation system while staying below the upper trims.
- SL: Choose this if you want a more comfort-focused setup with a richer feature mix than the SV.
- SR: Pick this if you want the sportier look and feel, plus pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning.
- Platinum: This is the right step up if you want more luxury and the added reverse emergency braking feature.
- Platinum Reserve: This is the top choice if you want the most upscale interior treatment, including semi-aniline leather and bronze-colored trim.
The safety package is strongest once you move above the base S, so that trim is the one most likely to feel stripped down.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Nissan Maxima?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 584 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.91% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 51.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,744, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Nissan Maxima's resale value?
The current average of $17,057 sits slightly below last year's $18,523.
That decline suggests the Maxima has softened in the market, which can be a concern if you plan to sell soon. On the other hand, a lower entry price can help you buy in at a more favorable point and reduce the amount of value left to lose.
If you keep the car in strong condition and maintain it well, you’ll be better positioned when it’s time to resell. Demand should also be helped by the Maxima’s strong owner satisfaction and distinctive V6-powered character.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima safe?
The 2019 Nissan Maxima earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating and five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for the front-passenger side in a frontal crash and overall for the side-impact pole test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward-emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and knee airbags for both front occupants. The SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
One important caveat is that the Maxima does not offer ProPilot Assist, so you won’t get Nissan’s semi-automated highway-driving suite here.
Should I buy a 2019 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a mild refresh with updated style, technology, and interior features.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $17,394, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $17,057 average.
- It adds a more spacious, comfort-oriented feel with a luxe interior and spacious trunk.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a mild refresh. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly roomier, more comfort-focused version, the 2020 is the better secondary path.
