Why it stands out
The 2019 Nissan Maxima stands out as Nissan’s premier sedan, combining considerable power and style with a premium midsize feel. It has endured for eight generations, and its powerful V6 engines and crisp handling have helped build a solid reputation over the past three decades. For buyers who want a sedan that feels more upscale than basic transportation, the Maxima’s premium interior materials and great ride quality are clear strengths.
For 2019, Nissan refreshed the Maxima ever so mildly, and that update brought renewed attention to its style, technology, and interior features. Even so, the car is not without drawbacks: its technology is described as outdated, and its design may be polarizing. That mix makes the 2019 Nissan Maxima appealing to shoppers who value comfort, performance, and a distinctive look, while still accepting that some of its tech and styling choices may not suit everyone.

Excellent power, especially in sport mode. Fuel economy is on the low end with lots of city driving. Good fit and finish; doesnt feel cheap. The leather seats are plush, but durable. Good noise level at high speeds. Very little vibration on rough roads. Odd rattle in the back which sounds like a loose seat lock, but the seats are secure. Rear factory tint is bubbling after 2.5 years.

| Change vs. Last Year | −8.83% |
Prices have softened 8.83% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 541 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Nissan Maxima earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, stylish appearance, and comfortable interior. The review summary also points to good handling and plush leather seats, which reinforce its upscale feel. On the trade-off side, the expert review calls out outdated technology and a potentially polarizing design.
For you, that means the Maxima makes the most sense if you want a sedan that feels more premium than basic transportation and still delivers a comfortable, engaging drive. It also shows a moderate amount of market availability, with 27.9% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a car that many drivers enjoy living with over time, especially because of its comfortable interior and strong performance. The expert review also describes the Maxima as a solid value and notes that it remains one of the few 6-cylinder sedans from a non-luxury brand, which supports the case for dependable ownership appeal. The cost-effectiveness commentary adds that it remains a good value despite few changes for 2019.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that you may be buying into a car with aging technology and some minor quality concerns, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Nissan Maxima?
At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s comfort and tech features still work as intended. Because the Maxima’s appeal depends heavily on its premium feel, interior condition is especially worth checking.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S skips navigation, while higher trims add more upscale materials and features; the SV brings blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and knee airbags for both front occupants; the SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
- Infotainment: Most trims get an updated navigation system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a customizable home screen, and a high-speed USB-C port; the base S does not get navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The Maxima returns 20 mpg city, 30 highway, and 24 combined.
Which 2019 Nissan Maxima trim should I buy?
The 2019 Nissan Maxima is offered in 6 trim levels: S, SV, SL, SR, Platinum, Platinum Reserve.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it misses navigation, so it makes the least sense if you want the Maxima’s upscale feel to come through in daily use.
- SV: This is the best-value trim because it adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control while keeping the Maxima’s core comfort and powertrain intact.
- SL: This trim is the step up if you want more comfort and convenience without jumping all the way to the top-end models.
- SR: Choose this if you want the sportier setup, including a firmer ride and added driver-assistance features like pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning.
- Platinum: This is the luxury-leaning choice, adding reverse emergency braking and more premium appointments.
- Platinum Reserve: This is the most upscale version, with semi-aniline leather and bronze-colored trim for buyers who want the richest interior.
The safety package is strongest on the higher trims, while the base S is the most limited on tech.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Nissan Maxima?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 541 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.83% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $16,743, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Nissan Maxima's resale value?
The current average of $16,896 sits slightly below last year's $18,533.
That price movement suggests the Maxima has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to the original market peak. The model’s strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand among used shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima safe?
The Maxima is an IIHS Top Safety Pick and earns five-star ratings from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for the front-passenger side in a frontal crash and for the side-impact pole test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward-emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and knee airbags for both the driver and front passenger. The SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking. One caveat is that the Maxima does not offer ProPilot Assist, which is a notable omission for a 2019 model.
Should I buy a 2019 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.83% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 refresh brought updated style, technology, and interior features.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $16,989, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $16,896 average.
- It is a minimal-change carryover with only modest updates.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2019 is the smarter buy because it already reflects the refresh and currently sits at a lower average price. If you want the newest nearby version and are willing to pay a bit more, the 2020 is the cleaner alternative.
