Why it stands out
The 2019 Nissan Maxima stands out as Nissan’s premier sedan, combining considerable power and style with a premium midsize feel. It has endured for eight generations, and its powerful V6 engines and crisp handling have helped build a solid reputation over the past three decades. For buyers who want a sedan that feels more upscale than basic transportation, the Maxima’s premium interior materials and great ride quality are clear strengths.
For 2019, Nissan refreshed the Maxima ever so mildly, and that update brought renewed attention to its style, technology, and interior features. Even so, the car is not without drawbacks: its technology is described as outdated, and its design may be polarizing. That mix makes the 2019 Nissan Maxima appealing to shoppers who value comfort, performance, and a distinctive look, while still accepting that some of its tech and styling choices may not suit everyone.

Excellent power, especially in sport mode. Fuel economy is on the low end with lots of city driving. Good fit and finish; doesnt feel cheap. The leather seats are plush, but durable. Good noise level at high speeds. Very little vibration on rough roads. Odd rattle in the back which sounds like a loose seat lock, but the seats are secure. Rear factory tint is bubbling after 2.5 years.

Yes — the 2019 Nissan Maxima earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise the powerful performance, stylish appearance, and comfortable interior. The feedback also points to good handling and plush leather seats, which supports the Maxima’s upscale feel.
The main trade-offs are outdated technology and a design that may not appeal to everyone. That makes it a better fit if you want a comfortable, distinctive sedan with a premium vibe rather than the most modern-feeling cabin.
With 26.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with drivers highlighting its strong performance, comfortable interior, and enjoyable driving character. The overall tone suggests a sedan many owners feel good about keeping for the long haul.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Maxima’s solid reputation and its well-sorted powertrain and suspension, which support confidence over time. The main ownership risk for used buyers is that minor quality issues and aging technology can become more noticeable as mileage climbs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Nissan Maxima?
At 51.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing, especially if you are comparing cars with similar prices but different condition histories.
Focus on signs of wear in the interior, electronics, and bodywork, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on its premium feel. If the car has been in an accident, make sure panel alignment, paint match, and safety systems all check out.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S skips navigation, while higher trims add more upscale equipment and features; the SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. Fuel economy is rated at 20 mpg city, 30 highway, and 24 combined.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and knee airbags for both front occupants. The SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
- Infotainment: Most trims get an updated navigation system, while the base S does not. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system includes a customizable home screen, voice-based destination lookup, and a high-speed USB-C port.
- Fuel efficiency: The Maxima is rated at 20 mpg city, 30 highway, and 24 combined.
Which 2019 Nissan Maxima trim should I buy?
The 2019 Nissan Maxima is offered in 6 trim levels: S, SV, SL, SR, Platinum, Platinum Reserve.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it skips navigation, so it makes the most sense only if you want the lowest price and can live without that feature.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and the updated navigation system while staying below the more expensive luxury-focused trims.
- SL: Choose this if you want a more comfort-oriented setup and a step up in equipment without moving all the way to the top of the range.
- SR: This is the sportier choice, with a firmer ride, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and a more aggressive look.
- Platinum: This is the trim to target if you want the most upscale mainstream Maxima experience, including reverse emergency braking and richer interior appointments.
- Platinum Reserve: This is the most luxurious version, with semi-aniline saddle-colored leather, diamond quilting, and bronze-colored trim.
The safety package is strongest on the higher trims, so if advanced driver-assistance features matter most, you should shop above the base model.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Nissan Maxima?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare options and enough deal activity to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 544 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.33% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 51.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,744, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Nissan Maxima's resale value?
The current average of $17,138 sits slightly below last year's $18,494.
That decline suggests the Maxima has softened in the market, which can work against you if you buy at the wrong price. On the other hand, it also means you may be entering at a more favorable point than buyers did a year ago.
For a future seller, the key is to buy carefully and avoid overpaying for condition or trim features that the market does not fully reward. A well-kept example should still hold appeal because it offers a premium feel, strong performance, and broad buyer interest among shoppers who want a sedan with personality.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Nissan Maxima safe?
The Maxima is an IIHS Top Safety Pick and earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for only the front-passenger side in a frontal crash and overall for the side-impact pole test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward-emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and knee airbags for both front occupants. The SV adds blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, the SR adds pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning, and Platinum models add reverse emergency braking.
The main caveat is that the NHTSA results are not perfect, since some sub-tests came in at four stars rather than five. That is worth keeping in mind if you are comparing it with rivals that post cleaner crash-test results.
Should I buy a 2019 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.33% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 refresh brought updated style, technology, and interior features.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $17,285, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $17,138 average.
- It adds a more spacious trunk and remains a refined carryover.
The bottom line: The 2019 is the better pick if you want the lower average price and a refreshed version of the Maxima’s core formula. If you are willing to spend a bit more for a newer model year, the 2020 is the safer alternative for buyers who want a slightly updated ownership path without a major change in character.
