CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS
overall

Summary
With 216 currently listed for sale and an average price of $30,406, 36.6% of 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
67.1% of 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS stands out first for its styling. Mercedes-Benz describes it as the brand’s slickest sedan, and the car’s design remains striking even in its third generation. That visual drama is part of what has always made the CLS distinctive, and this version continues to lean into that role while remaining a rarer sight on the road.
Beyond the looks, the 2019 CLS is presented as a more advanced and more capable luxury sedan. Mercedes-Benz says it received major changes to its engines, tech, and style, and the summary says it aims to lead among luxury cars with superior technology and powertrains. It also brings a great ride quality and standard advanced safety features, which help balance the car’s style with everyday appeal.
There are still tradeoffs, though. The back seat is cramped, the technology is described as unintuitive, and the car is considered poor value for money. That mix makes the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS appealing to buyers who prioritize design, comfort, and a premium feel, while accepting that practicality and ease of use are not its strongest points.

Great power with exceptional handling. AMG features (sports seats, steering wheel) are definitely worth the extra money. The infotainment is a bit outdated despite the controls being very intuitive, and sound system is top notch! I was looking at the A7/S7 and thought this was a much better option.

Great car. Its a mercedes so repairs are expensive and the CLS is a little impractical in the back seat. But its a blast to drive and smooth and quiet.

Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
It stands out as a striking luxury sedan with a dramatic design, a great ride quality, and standard advanced safety features. The trade-offs are a cramped back seat, unintuitive technology, and poor value for money, so it fits you best if you care more about style, comfort, and premium presence than everyday practicality.
Only 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards careful comparison shopping.
Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The CLS is presented as a more advanced luxury sedan with major changes to its engines, tech, and style, and its powertrain is described as technically impressive and smooth in daily use. The hybrid setup also helps with seamless starts and stop-start operation, while the cabin and ride quality reinforce the sense of refinement.
The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that its complex technology and premium hardware can make repairs and upkeep more demanding than you might expect.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS?
At 66.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any accident history or visible cosmetic repairs. Pay close attention to the condition of the electronics, driver-assistance features, and interior trim, since this model leans heavily on technology and luxury materials. It also makes sense to confirm that the ride quality, braking behavior, and cabin functions all feel consistent on a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The CLS is presented as a highly styled luxury sedan with a lavish interior, 64-color ambient lighting, and a premium cabin feel, but the base setup still carries the model’s core design drama and advanced safety equipment.
- Powertrain: The CLS 450 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 with a 48-volt hybrid system and an electric motor-generator, and the setup is described as smooth, technically impressive, and well suited to relaxed touring.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes pedestrian and blind-spot detection, front and rear cross-traffic alerts, forward-collision alert, auto braking, a driver-attention monitor, Car-to-X warnings, and a system that can help route around a stopped obstacle. The available Driver Assistance Package adds semi-autonomous steering, braking, lane changes, and speed adaptation.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with a configurable instrument display, standard navigation with three years of map updates and live traffic, and Mercedes me connect telematics. Onboard Wi-Fi and wireless charging are optional.
- Fuel efficiency: The CLS 450 4Matic is rated at 23 mpg city, 30 highway, and 26 combined, while the rear-wheel-drive CLS 450 is rated at 24 city, 31 highway, and 26 combined.
Which 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS is offered in 2 trim levels: CLS 450 4Matic and AMG CLS 53.
Here's the short version:
- CLS 450 4Matic: This is the base car, but the content makes clear that it is already well covered with the inline-6 hybrid powertrain, a smooth ride, standard advanced safety features, and a richly appointed cabin. It is the best-value choice if you want the CLS experience without chasing extra performance.
- AMG CLS 53: This version adds a more powerful 429-hp setup with an electric compressor and is aimed at buyers who want stronger acceleration and a sportier character. Choose it if performance matters more to you than value.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that the Driver Assistance Package is optional, so you should verify whether a given car has it before you buy.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.68% compared with last year.

What is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS's resale value?
The current average of $30,397 sits slightly below last year's $33,288.
That price movement suggests the market has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. The CLS also sits in a narrow high-end segment, so condition, equipment, and presentation matter a lot when it comes time to resell. Because options are expensive and resale value is described as only average, you should expect the strongest returns from well-kept examples with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS safe?
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS has not been rated by either NHTSA or IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes pedestrian and blind-spot detection, front and rear cross-traffic alerts, forward-collision alert, auto braking, a driver-attention monitor, Car-to-X warnings, and advanced steering that can help route around a stopped obstacle. The available Driver Assistance Package adds semi-autonomous steering, braking, lane changes, and speed-aware cruise behavior, though the system is described as imperfect enough that you may want to disable it at times.
Should I buy a 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.68% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 CLS is described as a striking third-generation model with major changes to its engines, tech, and style, and it aims to lead among luxury cars with superior technology and powertrains.
The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive styling and a well-equipped luxury sedan, the 2019 is the right target year to focus on. If you are more price-sensitive, shop carefully for the cleanest, best-priced example rather than stretching for a newer or more heavily optioned car.
