Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 stands out by building on the model’s strong reputation for style and driving enjoyment rather than simply coasting on it. Mazda updated the CX-5 just one year into its second generation, and the changes were aimed at making an already appealing compact SUV more competitive. The result is a vehicle that combines good looks with a best-in-class driving experience, while also adding improved handling, smartphone connectivity, and a more powerful engine for its new top-tier trims.
That mix of strengths makes the 2019 CX-5 especially attractive to buyers who care about how a crossover feels on the road as much as how it looks in the driveway. Standard advanced safety features and strong value for money add to its appeal, and owners often praise its luxury feel, interior quality, and fuel efficiency. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: the technology can be unintuitive, and the base engine is described as underwhelming, with some owners wishing for more power and a few high-end features that are not present.

This is a great car! Has android and Apple car play. Sirius XM ready. Grand Touring has all the creature comforts. Curve adaptive headlights improve nighttime driving visibility. Seats are ergonomic. Very good on gas! Decently powerful for a 4 cylinder. Comfortable seats. AWD models have great traction in wet. Havent driven in snow with it yet, but will be soon.

How much does the 2019 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,093 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,195.01 |
| Year-Round High | $19,588.06 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,588 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.53% |
Prices have softened 2.53% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,923 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $18,195.01, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its value, luxury feel, great handling, impressive fuel efficiency, and interior quality. That lines up with the overview’s focus on a crossover that feels rewarding to drive while still delivering strong everyday appeal.
The main trade-offs are the unintuitive technology and the underwhelming base engine, so you should expect the strongest experience if you care more about refinement and road feel than outright punch. In market terms, 27.2% of listings are good or great deals, which gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle people feel good about keeping, with praise for its value, luxury feel, great handling, impressive fuel efficiency, and interior quality. That kind of feedback usually reflects a model you can count on for satisfying daily use over the long term.
The expert drive notes also support that impression by describing the CX-5 as a strong all-around package with solid efficiency and confident behavior on the road. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about a glaring reliability red flag and more about making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained well and still feels as polished as it should.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mazda CX-5?
At 67.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because the model’s appeal depends heavily on refinement, you should also pay close attention to interior condition, tech usability, and whether the vehicle still feels tight and well-kept on the road.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport trim includes LED headlights, a push-button ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, and a strong safety suite, while higher trims add keyless entry, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear climate vents, heated front seats, an upgraded stereo, leather upholstery, navigation, and more luxury features. If you want the best balance of equipment and value, the Touring and Grand Touring trims are the most natural places to compare.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged version in the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature raises output to 250 hp and 310 lb-ft on premium fuel, or 227 hp with lower-octane gas. The base setup is efficient and adequate, but the turbo engine is the clear choice if you want stronger acceleration.
- Safety package: The i-ActiveSense suite includes automatic headlights, wipers, and high beams; lane-departure warning and assist; adaptive cruise control; and forward-collision warning and mitigation. It is standard across the range, while the 360-degree camera and parking sensors are reserved for the Signature trim.
- Infotainment: The CX-5 uses a 7-inch touchscreen on the base trim, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard above Sport. The MazdaConnect system is responsive, but the scroll-wheel interface may not be your favorite, and the 360-degree camera’s resolution is a weak point.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 25 mpg city, 31 highway, and 28 combined, while the turbo setup is rated at 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined.
Which 2019 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, but it still brings LED headlights, a push-button ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, and the full standard safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest price and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up.
- Touring: This trim adds keyless entry, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear climate vents, heated front seats, two more USB ports, and an upgraded stereo. It looks like the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds the everyday features you’re most likely to notice.
- Grand Touring: Here you get adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, leather upholstery, an upgraded driver display, and navigation. Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin without jumping all the way to the turbo models.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This is the first trim with the turbocharged engine, plus a head-up display, power-folding mirrors, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a windshield wiper de-icer. It’s the right pick if you want the stronger powertrain and more cold-weather comfort.
- Signature: This top trim adds ambient cabin lighting, upgraded leather upholstery, real wood trim, a 360-degree camera, and parking sensors front and rear. Buy this if you want the most luxury and the most parking assistance, but it’s more about premium feel than value.
The safety suite is standard across the lineup, with only the 360-degree camera and parking sensors reserved for the Signature trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mazda CX-5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,923 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.53% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,195.01, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $19,093 sits slightly below last year's $19,588.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can help you if you’re shopping now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the CX-5’s strong reputation for style, handling, and value should help it stay attractive to used buyers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 safe?
A 5-star rating in nearly every category from the government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is blemished solely by a 4-star rating in the rollover category, a weak point for many crossovers. A similar story is told by the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which awarded the CX-5 top marks in every category except the child safety anchors' ease of use, which earned the second-highest rating of Acceptable.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The i-ActiveSense safety suite is standard across the range and includes automatic headlights, wipers, and high beams; lane-departure warning and assist; adaptive cruise control; and forward-collision warning and mitigation. The 360-degree camera and parking sensors are limited to the Signature trim, so lower trims miss out on those extra convenience and visibility aids.
Should I buy a 2019 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.53% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda added Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, improved handling, and a turbo engine for top trims.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,846, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $19,093 average.
- It emphasizes style, sophistication, and a rewarding driving experience.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $20,309, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $19,093 average.
- It leans further into premium territory with upscale materials and a more luxury-like feel.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, safety, and updated features, the 2019 is the strongest all-around choice. If your budget is tighter, the 2018 can still deliver the CX-5’s core appeal for less, while the 2020 makes sense if you’re willing to pay more for a more premium presentation.
