CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 5,705 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,916.00, 30.6% of 2019 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Ford Explorer 4.6 / 5 stars.
71.4% of 2019 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Ford Explorer stands out as a roomy, family-oriented midsize SUV with a broad mix of powertrains and a layout that still feels practical for everyday use. It rides on Ford’s D4 platform, which gave this generation a crossover-like character, and it was available with rear-wheel drive by default, with all-wheel drive offered as an option. That setup helped make it more car-like to drive than earlier Explorers, while still preserving the utility buyers expect from the nameplate.
Powertrain choice is one of the Explorer’s biggest differentiators. In 2019, buyers could get a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder, or a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo. The available 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 was the performance standout, and the generation also offered a hybrid in other model years, though not for 2019. Ford also gave this generation modern infotainment and safety equipment, including SYNC, Ford Co-Pilot360 features, and available conveniences such as heated and ventilated front seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and adaptive cruise control.
At the same time, the 2019 Explorer is not without compromises. The source material notes that this generation rarely ranked at the top of its class in any one area, and reliability has been a recurring concern for the model line. Even so, it remains appealing for shoppers who want a used SUV with strong engine choices, available all-wheel drive, and a familiar, versatile cabin.

Really great. Lots of high tech features. Looks nice and is easy to handle. I would prefer the ST model for even more features and power. However for now, this one fit our budget.

How much does the 2019 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,985 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,994.35 |
| Year-Round High | $19,252.59 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,253 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.78% |
Prices have softened 11.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,803 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $16,994.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2019 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Ford Explorer earns a 4.6/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its value for money, powerful engine options, and advanced features. That lines up well with its family-oriented midsize SUV mission, especially if you want a roomy cabin and a practical layout for everyday use.
The market also shows 27.2% of listings as good or great deals, so you have room to shop selectively without rushing.
Is the 2019 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
In owner feedback, reliability is called out positively alongside the vehicle’s powerful engine options and advanced features. That suggests many drivers have found it dependable enough to live with over time, even if some mention minor comfort and camera-screen complaints.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure you choose a well-kept example, since condition can matter more than the badge.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Ford Explorer?
At 71.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for wear, uneven panel gaps, and signs of poor repair quality.
Focus especially on overall condition, since a clean-looking listing can still hide past issues that affect long-term ownership.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,803 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.78% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,994.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $16,985 sits slightly below last year's $19,253.
That price decline means today’s buyers are getting in at a lower entry point, but it also signals that future sellers may face more competition when it’s time to resell. If the market stays soft, your return will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $22,283, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $16,985 average.
- It brings an all-new chassis and a more modern, ambitious redesign.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2019 if you want the better value and are comfortable shopping carefully for condition. If you want the newer redesign and can stretch your budget, the 2020 is the stronger upgrade path; price-sensitive buyers should stay focused on the 2019.
