Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat stands out by adding more power and a bit of long-missing sportiness to Volkswagen’s midsize sedan. According to the test-drive summary, Volkswagen fitted it with an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and introduced a new GT trim that brings a V6 and a sport suspension. That combination gives the Passat a broader appeal than before, especially for buyers who want a family sedan with a little more character.
Even with those updates, the Passat is described as a competitive option in the midsize segment, though it is also said to be getting a little long in the tooth. The base S trim can now be equipped with advanced safety systems, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a forward-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking. Owner feedback also points to the Passat’s roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space, along with a smooth ride and strong value, while some drivers note the lack of features such as memory seats and a HomeLink system and mention that the steering can feel soft.

I have the SE Trim level. Roomy sedan that fits two adults up front and two kids plus a car seat in the back. On top of that it has the pep and acceleration of a sports car. Smooth ride yet fun to drive. The perfect all around combination.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with the VR6 in this surprisingly roomy sedan. The rear seat and trunk room is impressive. Pros - VR6 is powerful and pulls strong in any gear at any speed. It also has a wonderful throaty exhaust note. Put a Borla exhaust on this and you gain about 30 bhp and wow does it sound mean! - LED headlights are wonderful for night time visibility. - Tons of trunk space for a mid-sized sedan. - Handles well through turns with only minimum body roll. - Lots of standard safety features - AEB, Rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitor, etc. Cons - Soft steering - Skinny tires, need more rubber on the road to use all that horsepower without chirping or spinning when the lead foot is unleashed. -

| Year-Round High | $12,831.97 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,679 |

Prices have softened 3.03% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 654 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $11,940.98, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Yes — the 4.71/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.00/10. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, comfortable seating, impressive trunk space, smooth ride, and strong value. The overview also frames it as a practical midsize sedan with more power and a bit more character than before, which helps if you want a family car that feels less plain than the average commuter sedan. With 31.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s also a decent amount of market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with repeated praise for comfort, value, and a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time. The expert summary also emphasizes that the Passat remains a competitive option, and the performance notes describe the updated engine as smoother and more eager to rev, which supports the sense that it should be easy to count on day to day. The available maintenance perk on the base trim also helps reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example with the right equipment and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
At 54.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car is priced near the low end of the market. Focus on condition, equipment, and signs of prior repair quality, since the listing pool includes a meaningful number of cars with accident history. It also makes sense to compare trims carefully, because some of the most useful convenience and safety features are not standard on every version.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, a rear-view camera, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks App-Connect for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay unless you add the available driver-assistance package. Higher trims add features such as heated seats, a larger touchscreen, keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and more upscale materials.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined, while the 3.6-liter V6 delivers 19/28/22 mpg and adds much stronger acceleration.
- Safety package: The available driver-assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, while lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
- Infotainment: Most trims include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but the base S does not unless equipped with the available package. The system uses a 5-inch touchscreen on the base trim and a 6.3-inch screen on the R-Line, with an 8-speaker upgrade available on higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter turbo returns 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined, while the V6 returns 19/28/22.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S trim is the value play, but it lacks App-Connect unless you add the available driver-assistance package. It also starts with a smaller 5-inch touchscreen and fewer convenience features than the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE is the best all-around choice if you want a more complete daily driver. It adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, adaptive cruise control, and a more practical wheel setup without pushing into luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The SEL Premium is the most upscale choice, with real leather, power-folding mirrors, a power passenger seat, a memory driver seat, an automatic parallel parking system, and a Fender audio upgrade.
- Off-road trim: The GT is the enthusiast pick, not the everyday value pick. Its V6 and sport suspension make it more engaging, but the setup is aimed more at driving enjoyment than typical family-sedan priorities.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the base S can be equipped with the available driver-assistance package, which adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 654 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,940.98, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $12,295 sits slightly below last year's $12,679.
That price movement suggests the model has softened enough to create a better buying window now, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to move a car quickly. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, the current market gives you a reasonable chance to avoid overpaying up front. Strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests keep it from earning a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. The available driver-assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and those features are standard on the GT. Lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium. One caveat is that braking distances are only average, which is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 adds an upgraded 4-cylinder engine, a new GT trim, and available advanced safety systems on the base S.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,614, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,295 average.
- The 2017 emphasizes standard connectivity and safety across more trims.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2018 is the better target because it brings more power, a more interesting GT option, and still-competitive pricing. If your priority is spending less and you’re comfortable with the older model’s simpler value proposition, the 2017 is the cheaper path.
