Overview

The current generation of Volkswagen Passat is a vastly different today than it was when it first arrived in 2012. Since its introduction, it’s seen an overhauled engine lineup, a comprehensive refresh, and a redesigned technology stack. Volkswagen offers a simplified lineup for 2019.
The previously available V6 option is no more. All Passats this year benefit from a single engine, in the form of a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The sedan will likely feel faster than it is because all that torque is available as low as 1,600 rpm. Power goes to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission, and fuel economy stands at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined.
2019 pares down the six trims from last year to just two: the Wolfsburg Edition and the SE R-Line. The good news is that the Wolfsburg Edition features more standard content than the S trim it replaces: 17-inch alloy wheels, a 6.3-inch touchscreen, keyless access and start, leatherette, a leather steering wheel, heated front seats, and heated side mirrors. With the optional Wheel & Roof package, you’ll get 18-inch alloy wheels and a power sunroof.
Meanwhile the SE R-Line trim keeps the same sportier interior and exterior elements as last year’s R-Line, while throwing in additional content to top out the lineup. Standard features include 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, LED daytime-running lights, LED taillights, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ambient lighting, and Fender premium audio.
Despite its age, Volkswagen includes a competitive set of standard and optional safety features on the Passat. Every model gets forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking below 18 mph, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, post-collision braking, and a crash-response system. That last feature shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and switches on the hazard lights after certain types of collisions. Opt for the SE R-Line and you’ll get adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and front and rear parking sensors. The Passat received good scores in most categories during its last round of crash tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The Volkswagen Passat has always been an attractive, well-styled, and spacious midsize sedan with room for five. And while there’s no doubt that the simplified 2019 model is better than before, it has stiff competition from the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Camry. However, one area in which the Volkswagen definitely excels is the 6-year/72,000-mile full warranty it introduced in 2018, which carries forward into this year.

My wife and I acquired this car when my mother passed away. It joined the garage as the fifth car. We had every intention of returning it to the dealer that my mother had the lease under at our earliest possible convenience or negotiating some sort of a new deal with them on a vehicle that would suit us more, we believed. Two and a half years later, we were not able to let the car go. Not because of any sentimental reason. It just filled the gap that we didnt even know we needed so perfectly. Performance, delightful. Comfort, wonderful. Fuel efficiency, great. Dependability, outstanding. So we bought the car from the dealer, cash. Do you think we like it!

How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Passat cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,994 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,195.76 |
| Year-Round High | $14,121.46 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,132 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.05% |
Prices have softened 8.05% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 560 listings available, which suggests a workable amount of inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $12,195.76, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction.
That kind of feedback matters when you’re weighing a used sedan, because it suggests the ownership experience has been consistently positive for many drivers. With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
For you, that means the bigger ownership risk is less about broad sentiment and more about the condition of the specific car you’re considering. A careful inspection and clean service history matter most on a used example.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Passat?
At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any car that looks especially clean or unusually cheap. Focus your evaluation on body condition, repair quality, and signs of uneven wear so you can separate a well-kept car from one with hidden issues.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Passat?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.05% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,195.76, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $12,994 sits slightly below last year's $14,132.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, buying well below the current average gives you more cushion against depreciation. A clean history and strong condition will matter more when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,222, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $12,994 average.
- It adds more power and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,051, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $12,994 average.
- It gets a refresh that keeps the roomy, value-focused formula intact.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and current market softness, the 2019 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2018 is the better value play, while the 2020 makes sense only if you’re willing to pay more for the newer model-year refresh.
